Hi Tyler,

This is how the fertility issue was explained to me by my CF doctor. Sorry to be so graphic.

The reason why men with CF (99-98%) almost always can not conceive without IVF is because each normal man is born with the Vas Differens (spelling?). This tube inside the penis carries the sperm from the testicles to the tube it needs to go to which in turn allow a fertile ejaculation. Men with CF (well, almost all) are not born with the Vas Differens. That is why you can't conceive natrually. Your sperm count is 0 because you don't have the tube to carry the sperm to where it needs to go.

HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!

You do have the sperm!!!!!! With IVF, they are able to acquire your sperm from inside the testicles and implant the fertilized egg into your girlfriend. Men with CF CAN have children. They just have to have IVF. There is hope. Women on the other hand are in escense created equal. We just have a hard time conceiving because of the increased cervical mucus. My husband and I have been trying for a year. I don't remember how this issue came up with my CF doctor since I am the one trying, but it did. I hope this helps you understand why. Keep your head up. It CAN happen. You just need an extra boost. There is NOTHING that you could or could have done differently.

The IVF does work, my wife and I did it 3 years ago. They removed the sperm from me and fertilized her eggs with it. She had to go through much harder stuff to get her eggs out. The first time it didn't work for us but the second time, which was about 3 months later worked. We had twin boys. I had to see a urologist and an ivf specialist before all this and they can palpate and tell if you have vas deffrens (sp?) or not. Some cf patients do have them, or have partial vas defferens.
