Albuterol question

I have a question that I am hoping others here can help me with...

My daughter usually uses a Ventolin inhaler for her albuteral; 2 puffs twice a day. When she is sick she increases to up to 4 puffs every time she does her vest- so up to 16 puffs/day when ill.

She is coughing so hard that I don't think she is getting the albuteral very deep into her lungs with the inhaler since she's not getting a good inhale before coughing it right back out. So, I am going to have her neb it until the cough settles down.

My question: to those who neb albuteral, do you increase the AMOUNT you neb during times of illness as well as how frequently, like you would with an inhaler? I am not sure if I should have her do two vials at a time or not. I plan on asking her dr tomorrow, but I wanted to see what others do.

Jordan nebs 2 at a time quite often. There are even times that we do a treatment at home, and then we go to the ER, because it isn't helping, and they give him 2 more there. I think you're safe with 2.

Thank you everyone. I can tell the nebbing is helping... she is coughing (to the point of gagging) and bringing up SO much junk doing it this way. She was bringing up some before, but I could tell that she was just not able to benefit from the inhaler like she usually does. I'll try this w/ her next session.

She is really sick, sicker than she's been in a long time. It came on very quickly (she barely had cold symptoms 2 days ago.) She's started with blood-streaked sputum and tiny bloody 'dots', which is not unheard of with her, but usually only seen with more serious exacerbations and not after only a day or two of illness.

When I am sick I up my albuterol to every 4 hours (as needed) and the first few doses I do double up to open things up.

I hope she feels better soon <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
