B. Cepecia and Onions

My boss went to a conference and one of the topics was about B. Cepecia and cystic fibrosis. Knowing that my husband has CF, she listened.

She said that onion rot, like the nasty stuff you peel off the outer layer of an onion before using it for cooking is the same B. Cepecia that causes harm in CFer's lungs.

They used to think it was a different strain, but ends up it is the same. This kinda freaks me out that I would be bringing B. Cepecia into my home in the form of onions.

Onion rot is quite common, even if I only keep a couple onions in the house at once, sometimes they come from the store with a little rot.

What are your thoughts on this? I'm surprised the clinic didn't say anything. I will probably still buy onions but like 1 or 2 a week and cut and use them right away and keep them in the fridge in plastic bags.

I didn't think there had been a proven link between eating and/or handling onions and getting B. Cepacia

BUT since I'm paranoid, lol, I do take extra precautions. I do eat onions and cook with them; but someone else in my home cleans them and chops them for me just as a precaution. I asked my CF doc and she suggested that I am careful with all fresh veggies and she has me wear a mask and gloves when I go out to garden; again as a precaution.

I am also very cautious with onions. I always disinfect every surface they've been on and never purchase any that appear "unfresh".

Oh man. How did I not know this? I use onions CONSTANTLY, and Emily is always helping me in the kitchen. Guess I'll start treating them as though they were raw chicken. Uuugh. Thanks for the post!

Yeah, B. cepacia is common in onion rot and in the soil. I am very cautious when handling onions and I make sure my onions are in good condition if they are in my fridge. It comes to my mind a lot too when I'm gardening, but I figure I can't let that stop me from enjoying my gardens.

I'm extremely cautious about onions, too. Have a cutting board that I only use for onions and I disinfect it, the counter and the knife after use. Got my inlaws trained as well to keep onions in a separate storage area and to toss at the slightest sign of turning. Even grocery shopping, I keep the onion bag separate from the rest of the food both in the cart and in the bag.

just a bit of useless info: the latin word for onion is cepia (hence cepacia).... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
