caffeine- is it really harmful?

Hi everyone, In reading posts on this site and others about cf, I've seen several people saying that they don't drink any caffeine. I was just wondering why that is. I drink a lot of caffeine, probably a little more than I should, but my doctor knows that I drink a lot of soft drinks and she has never told me NOT to drink caffeine. So if anyone could just tell me your experiences on and off caffeine, or your reasons for not drinking caffeine, I'd appreciate it. Obviously I will look to reduce or cut caffeine out of my diet if it will make me healthier!!!! Thanks Jenny, 20 w/cf

I avoid soft drinks because they deplete the calcium in your system and since CFers can be prone to osteoperosis. The other reason I don't drink caffeine is that it dehydrates your body. I have it every once in a while, but I try to avoid it.

Text I drink one glass of iced tea every day and have been doing this for years. I was never told by my Dr. to not have any caffeine either. I was however told by my nurse while i was on iv treatment that i should not have too much caffeine because it can dry up secretions. I dont ingest a whole lot of caffeine to begin with, but i would imagine theres some truth somewhere to just about everything you hear. Eveything in moderation is the BEST advice i have ever heard. If you want to drink or eat something with caffeine in it,then by all means do not avoid the simple pleasures in life, just keep it in moderation. Life with cf is hard enough to live with all by itself. If you find something you enjoy, stick with it and keep it in moderation and you will be just fine.

You're not supposed to smoke, drink a lot of alcohol, and now, no caffeine? I couldn't live without caffeine, and I don't intend on giving it up, regardless of how bad it is for my health. A girl needs at least a few vices. This topic makes me want to go get coffee right now.

I used to be a big coffee drinker too, but it is true that caffeine does dry up not only your seceretions, but your body as well. It is also an irritant to the body and therefor you will lose more water. You will notice that if you never drink coffee and suddenly do, you have to pee ALL the time!! I am not telling anyone to stop drinking coffee or soda, but I would do it in moderation. I think that if cutting down to coffee once in a while instead of 3 times a day improves my health, then why not? But to each his own...

I gave up caffeine a few years ago. I noticed that it made it harder for me to cough up stuff which led to a tight feeling in my chest. I drink caffeine free sodas, and I do eat chocolate every once in awhile. But for the most part I stay away from the stuff. Plus I found that some of my meds actually increase the potency of caffeine. So I'd say moderation is fine. Even a non CFer shouldn't have so much caffeine.Sunnie

When I was younger (teenager to 20ies) I drank coke, pepsi, but never liked coffee. It go to the point that every year I could drink less & less coke because of the pain in my kidneys that would occur 12 hrs later. I stopped using anything with caffeine about the age of 30. When I stopped with coke there wasn't the option of caffeine free, so I drank juice, & still do. The juice is better for you and the carbonation in pop also dehydrates you. I do indulge in chocolate - That I couln't live without! 55nstillalive

Thanks everyone! I drink a lot of Dr. Pepper but recently I have come to really like Sprite, too, so I think I'm going to try and drink more of that and other caffeine free things when I'm craving a soda. But I'm happy that I won't have to give it up all together!~jenny, 20 w/cf
