Can't quit coughing

A few weeks ago I developed super tightness in my chest.... felt like a rhino on my chest. I cough so hard that I throw up. A few days ago they started me on prednisone for 5 days. No taper just jumped off at 40 mg. The prednisone didn't help.... at all. Yesterday afternoon I got blind sided with a migraine and each time I coughed I felt like my head was going to explode and my chest is still heavy. My back just shutters it is so exhausted.
They did send me out an antiboitic last night that I will need to take for the next two weeks.
I am so exhausted from coughing. I am still coughing so hard that I am still throwing up. Oh, yeah vesting gives me a dull headache and horrible coughing fits (I become a puddle of mush after vesting).
It is suspected that I may have pleurisy. No coughing up blood yet... and I don't want it to happen. The coughing does calm down at night so that I can get some pretty decent sleep. I started nocturnal oxgyen a few weeks ago. My sinuses started hurting today as well.
I go in tomorrow to clinic again. I have to get some help.... Should I prepare myself for a tune up?? I am so frustrated and worn out..... and that is putting it mildly.

My boyfriend has asked me why I don't take cough drops to calm down the coughing sometimes and I told him that it doesn't work for cf people, and it's a lot more effective for us to stick to our antibiotics.
But now I read that and am wondering... should we take cough drops when we're coughing to exhaustion?

Hey Carrie,
I'm glad you have a clinic appt today.. Did they do an x-ray ? or a ct scan ?? I hope so. I think your drs have to get to the bottom of what is going on w/ you asap !
I know that o2 can dry out your nose, so I would do extra nasal rinses. Also a humidifier attached to the o2 can be helpful. Also a nasal gel. Let us know what happened at clinic today ..
Take care <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> joni

I am doing the tea and Vicks on my chest. I had horrible nightmares last night.... horrible panic feelings.

My nose seems to be fine with the oxygen.

I feel like I have the flu on top of everything else... nightmares, body aches. Afraid I am having a adrenal crisis due to dropping so fast off the prednisone.

My cough is better this morning... touch of a sore throat.

As a general rule, people with CF dont want to take meds that will stop their coughing. That being said, coughing to exhaustion is really counter-productive. I take tussin CF quite a bit and hydrocodone when I start reaching my coughing tolerance limit (which is when I start to snap ribs). In a pinch, ice-cold coke (the carbonation, caffeine, and cold) seems to help a lot too. I also take suppressants when I need to attend a functions, such as a symphony concert, or one of my kids school things, etc. I dont worry much at this point about NOT coughing enough. Usually I cant stop it if I try, only mute it down somewhat.

If you are coughing so hard that you are having back pain or if you were coughing all night and couldn't get wny sleep then maybe you should try something to get a little relief just remember that coughing is the only way to clear mucus.

Guaifenesen (active ingredient in Mucinex but WAY cheaper if you can find it in generic form) is my go-to stop coughing medicine. I have also had a little success with Vicks and tea, sitting propped up.

But, as a lot of people said, the best thing is to make sure you are doing regular treatments, using HS as much as possible (if you can tolerate it), and being as active as you can.
