CF diet on new lungs

Hello, I haven't had a tx but I'm curious why you have to change your diet after tx. Is everyone post-tx not suppose to eat sugary foods or is that just b/c of diabetes? I haven't heard any mention of diet change before, so I'm just wondering what that's all about. Thanks.

You are NOT supposed to so much as it is something that I think some people try to do. Just to eat better for the overall health of their bodies.

Also to add - for alot of people weight gain is easier and I know for me if I ate now the way I ate pre transplant I would weigh about 140 lbs probably. I havent so much cut back what I eat as I have changed what I eat to healthier foods. Just something to benefit my body more than junk food or sweets.

It wasn't something that they told me to do though.

I will also put this out there. I know we are not allowed grapefruit because it interacts with the drugs we are on - but foods high in sodium are to be kept to a minimum because of the meds we are on was well can raise our blood pressure.

I had a long hard talk with my coordinator about the sodium thing being that as CFers we tend to crave or need more salt/sodium. She told me my regular diet should be fine given my age.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I haven't had a tx (nor am I listed) but I try to eat alot of organic and all natural foods. My pastas and pasta sauces, chicken, pork, steak, beef, veggies, fruits and milk are all organic. Sometimes I will not be able to get the organic fruits and veggies at my grocery store but that is ok. I use brown rice instead of white rice and I don't really eat alot of bread. I've never been a big bread fan. But the whole wheat breads are supposed to be better for you than white bread. I RARELY have soda. Sometimes when I order pizza or on the rare occasions I get Wendy's I will drink soda but for the most part I just drink water and organic milk. Oh and OJ. Not organic though...I like Florida's Natural hehe. My snacks are of course not organic because I am a total junk food lover - which I am sure will have to change once I do get a tx.

I also use lots of organic cleaning products. Seventh Heaven is a good one. They have cleaning supplies and laundry detergents. And (this is how wacky I am haha) I even use all natural toothpaste.

I will say that since I have switched to all water and organic foods I have felt much better. I don't get so bloated and feel cruddy all the time. I still have lots of days where I feel like crap but that will happen. Even just cutting out soda and drinking water will have a huge effect on your body. I had a cyst growing on my shoulder. the dr could not figure out what it was. he sent me for x-rays to make sure it wasn't cancerous and told me to take abx. At that time I was already on 3 (2 of which they would rx for somehting like that). So I stopped drinking soda and started drinking water and within a week the thing was gone! He sent me for another xray and sure enough it has disappeared.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. Since my tx I have to now check my sugar levels due to few of the meds. Last week I started eating about 90% organic and what I noticed was that my sugar wasn't going up anymore. My sugar is still higher than normal but it seems to be better on organic food so far???? But you'll still find me with a soda every now and then. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thank you so much!!!
