CF + skydiving = ok?

The love of my life's big 30th birthday is coming up in a week... March 9th. He has talked for YEARS about his desire to go skydiving and for some reason or another we have just never gotten around to it. We just recently moved to Arizona from Texas so we can't have a big party like we normally would back home with all our friends & family, well, cuz, we know no one here! So, it occurred to me that I should surprise him on the big day and go skydiving!! He would flip it out, I know, so I reallllllllllllly want to do it for him.

Here's my concern though: altitude change/dropping that fast, combined with any impact on the chest region upon landing. Note: we have flown numerous times and normally he does fine, but over the last year he has had more trouble with high altitudes and notices a tightness in his chest if we are driving in the mountains, etc. Also, he has had 2 severe bouts with hemoptysis within the last 12 months and, knock on wood, I don't want it to come back.

Just wondering if anyone with CF has skydove - skydiven - skydived - whatever, before, and if so, any negative impacts?

It's such a huge deal to be celebrating his 30th... he is a 'sicker' CF (diagnosed @ birth) and honestly never thought he would make it to this day. I just want to make it unforgettable.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions on this matter- I appreciate it!

I went skydiving when I was around 27 (I think) and you're right he will never forget it, it was the best damn thing I have ever done, and once I came down I just wanted to head back up again.

I did end up having a quite a big bleed after the jump due to the pressure etc,and ended up in hospital and on IVs lol (mind you I was pretty much bleeding ever day) but it was worth it!

Only other thing you need to be concered about is your other halfs oxygen saturation (is he on 02) you usually go up to 10,000 feet (which is what I jumped at) I wasn't on oxygen at the time and I had no effects from the altitude....but if he was on 02, then I would prolly say it's a no go'er

and its fricken freezing up there, LOL, I was quite surprised how cold it was, it was a hot day and I was sweating like a pig, but almost froze my bits off when they opened the door!

hmmm hope I answered some of your questions!

I think he will love it!

Make sure he has a treatment prior to going up, it will help

It sounds like quite a risky thing to do healthwise...although i am one that sees no good reason for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane .

I live in Arizona and surely you could find something else enjoyable to do for him. We have the bondurant school out here if he enjoys fast driving or trick driving (chases, skids etc.)

There really are a lot of other things you could do, maybe check online and do some searches for things that he enjoys or has interests in... if you do decide on the skydiving I wish you a wonderful time and good health .

Hiya
I've been thinking about doing skydiving (tandem) and asked my doctors about it. They said since i don't have any o2 problems they'd be fine with it. (my lung function is also high - now about 70% (up from late 50's-60's 2 years ago woot!)). I've never had haemoptysis. They just want me to have a bone scan to be doubly happy for me to do it because of the impact at the bottom. Last bone scan i had was showed slight osteopenia so we'll see. (i'd prob do it anyway, but since i'm doing it for the CFtrust i need a medical decleration!)
Good luck.

I dont knwo about skydiving but my docs ok's scuba for me which is alot pressure, they wrent thrilled since I have hemoptysis but if no active bleeding then they said it was ok as long not deep depths but FYI I had to fill out health history and needed note from my doc saying it was ok. Maybe you could surprise him with the idea and see if he feels up to it?

I would suggest that you call and ask his dr. Let them know you want to suprise him so they wont mention it. They may not tell you, with HIPPA and all, but you could ask.
Sounds like alot of fun to me. I have always wanted to do that too. Last fall I signed up for a give away of one session. I won a "ride along". I dont get to jump out, but I get to ride with the divers and watch them do it. I cant wait to do it. I can see what it is like without having to jump. I may not want to jump anyway, so this way, I dont have to.

Good luck,

i know a guy with CF who has been skydiving several times and LOVED it. he didn't mention anything strange about trouble breathing or altitude or anything. he highly recommended it! just so you know, though, he is 21 with moderate lung problems.

have fun!
