i am trying to get pregnant and i have read on here and other places that women with cf have a hard time getting pregnant and my question is does it help to be healthier? i really want to conceive naturally. i have normal lung functions and have never been hospitalized, the only problem i really have is that i am underweight which i have read cause problems with having a baby. i just want to know if my chances are normal or if there are any things i can try to help conceive naturally?

Being underweight can make it more difficult with or without CF. And lung functions have always been stressed to me by my doctors as being very important. Not only for getting pregnant and during, but mostly for afterwards when you are the most stressed and more likely to get sick.

As far as Mucinex goes, I only did the Mucinex for one month before I got pregnant, I think it helped but im pretty convinced the Pre-Seed lubricant I used helped the most. It helps create a good enviroment for the sperm so they can reach the egg. Just google PreSeed and it will come up with their site. The product is pricey but soooo worth it. I had been trying for six month prior to using the Mucinex and Pre Seed and had no luck and three weeks prior to trying the Mucinex I had my yearly exam and my Gyno had made the comment that my Cervical mucus was really thick.

Lucky me the first time I used anything ( mucinex and preseed) I was able to concieve.

By the way Mucinex helps with thinning of the mucus in the body. So when you take it, it will possibly help with your cervical mucus in making it thinner so the sperm can travel more easily. When I took it , it also loosened the mucus in my lungs too.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions, you can pm me or ask on here.

thanks i saw your comment on the post about the pre-seed and just talked to my fiance about it. i am going to try and hope that is works. i have had no complications with my cf my whole life and think because of that my body will be ok to take on the strain. was your pregnancy hard at all? and do you have any cf complications?

Im currrently pregnant for the first time, im 13 weeks and 4 days. I havent had any huge issues. My only complaint so far is that I had a very sensitive cervix and for a few weeks I would get streaks of blood and even passed some blot clots. The dr said it was probably a combo of coughing, straining due to this crazy constipation I have and the vaginal utlrasounds I was having.

One thing I did that I think helped and anyone should do this when they are trying is go ahead and pick an over the counter prenatal and start taking it. It really helped me build up my vitamin levels. I dont usually have issues with my vitamins, but occasionally they tell me my vit D will get a little low and since I have been on the prenatals and taking a source CF or AquADEKS every day I have been good on levels.

Im not exactly sure what you would consider CF complicatiions. I have sinus issues and my pfts are 75% . I take prevacid twice a day due to my GERD.

I am also in the trying-to-get-pregnant boat. My doctors and CF team have been so supportive which definitely helps. In terms on the vitamins, they have really changed them around on me to 1) ensure I am getting all the right vitamins, and 2) to ensure I do not get TOO MUCH vitamin A (can be toxic to developing baby if you have too much). This is the combo that I am working with:
1) One aquADEK in the morning
2) One 5mg folic acid (I have CFRD which is why the folic acid dose is high high high)
3) Two Ultra-Tums per day (one in the morning and one at night) for calcium
4) One 1000 IUI Vitamin D in the morning
I've never really had vitamin level problems, but it would be worth finding out from you doctor what vitamin combo would work best for you. Goodluck!!!!

I had a difficult time getting pregnant the first time around. I tried naturally for over a year and had no luck {tried Mucinex, Pre-seed, no lubricant etc....} My husband and I spoke about our options with my Gyno and decided to go with insemination. I started out on several oral drugs to produce additional eggs and increase my progesterone. I luckily got pregnant after the first round of insemination. The Gyno told me that my cervical mucous was very thick and never would have gotten pregnant naturally. The insemination was god sent. My daughter is now 3.5 and healthy as can be. I had some difficulties during my pregnancy with a few lung infections but I was able to go on my antibiotics like normal. I did Tobi and Cipro via IV with no problems and no effects to the baby. We are going to try insemination again in Septemeber for baby #2......Good Luck to all...

I am also low weight and very mild in my CF. No hospitalizations and the only meds I take are pancreatic enzymes. My bf and I started trying to have a baby in Sept of 2012, the first two months we didnt take it to seriously just werent "being safe" anymore but not on any watch of ovulation dates or anything. In November I started working around the ovulation dates (I downloaded an app for my phone that tells you the estimated dates of ovulation based on you entering your periods start and ends) and its now June and I am pregnant. So it took me about 9 months to get pregnant but it was very frustrating as the months passed and every month my period would come. I started thinking I was going to be in the something like 30% of CF women who can't have children and it started bringing me down but it just took time. It seemed like as soon as I gave up on being worried about it it happened. I am now about 7 weeks! Sometimes its just a matter of patience and not over-thinking it. I took pre-natals for the past few months as well to make sure I would have alot of folic acid in my body when I did happen to conceive cause I had read it was VERY important. And wouldnt you know it, as soon as I got busy with work and moving into a new house and got out of my I want a baby mindset there was the miss period and the positive on the pee stick <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

Basically, . . . we don't always get what we want, we get what we need. That 9 months was a bitch to get through but so will the next 9 months and I am happy about all of it!

Goodluck to you sweetheart, it'll happen as soon as you least expect it to. lol mine was a few weeks before a wedding that fell on my birthday and had an open bar I was VERY excited about. This baby put a cramp on those plans but was the best present I could have got. <3

Thank you so much for your response. Your situation and mind set sounds just like where I am at. I had started to worry that I would never get pregnant but I am now at the stage where I am not focusing so hard on getting pregnant but on other things. I am about to start tracking my ovulation days and continue with my mucinex and presented as well as vitamins. Congratulations on your baby and I wish the best for you. I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

I am very healthy CF-wise (FEV1 115%, PS, healthy weight, etc) and I have not been able to get pregnant on my own. But, IUI has worked wonderfully for me. I've gotten pregnant 3 of the 3 times I done IUI+clomid (first was m/c, second was my daughter, and I'm 8 weeks pregnant after the third). Good luck!

Hi there congratulations on your coming baby.
My story is one of the unlucky 30% unfortunately, after trying for a baby for 14 years two attempts at ivf, due to very very thick mucus, didn't take anything, but don't think that mucinex, would have been out when i was trying with my ex hubby(yeah the marriage did split up to my cf and not being able to get pregnant), im 47 live in Northern Ireland. Never achieved the only thing i really wanted, something i'll never forget or totally come to terms with, as most of the cf women in their 20's now seem to be able to conceive.

It worked out for the best for me not having a baby as ive two furry babies(not the same of course), but was in a bad marriage so glad i had no children. Just thought id share.
Good luck to you all who "got lucky"
Angela
