Chronic back pain
I do not have CF, but I don't know if this is normal to experience with lung disease? I can't stand myself. It's chronic aching in my spinal cord and it's concentrated on the right side moreso then the left. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have chronic back pain, but it seems to be my intercostal muscles. Whenever, I have a coughing fit, it will start hurting and then hurt every time I cough for a couple of months. I've never had pain in my spine, though.

Jena and Annie,
I've had a lot of problems with back strain and intercostal muscle strain from coughing. I usually end up on hydrocodone and other stuff. I have learned to take the hydrocodone when the muscle pain hits a certain level, because beyond that, I know I will break 3-4 ribs with the next coughing fit. A proactive strategy has really seemed to work for me. Jeana, ever had an x-ray to see if you broken some ribs? Those often take months to heal since the coughing never really goes away and they keep getting reinjured. Pleuritis is another painful one to have from a lot of coughing too. Anyone have any oother effective strategies for this?

I have had chronic back and neck pain, starting on my right side, for several years now. The muscles are sometimes tender to the touch but not always. I have been to physical therapy which has sometimes helped, but it has also made it worse. I find that heat, ice, and massage are the best therapies but nothing has made it go away completely. Exercising my upper back muscles with activities such as climbing has also helped, but only when it was mild pain.

I think i may have broken a rib also by coughing (also right side) but that was a different more searing pain than what I experience with my muscles.

I hope that helps!

I have back pain every now and then for several yrs, recently been going to Pt. maybe helps a little, but the Pt person sugested maybe a Chiropactor. Went last week for first time ever, he used what is called a activator on my muscles and aligned my spine on two different visits last wk. Much better and able to sleep on my right side, after first visit, have not slept on rt side for over a month because of pain. He said come back on a as need basis. Great pain free, back. It worked for me. By the way no discomfort (pain) while he worked on me. The cost for first visti was $80. and follow up visits are $35. very reasonable. My Ins. does not cover. Well worth it-!!

I have tried chiro and holistic meds, massage, etc for over 10 years. It will help for a day or two if I am lucky. It is not feasible financially or time-wise to have 3 appts a week. A massage here and there does help with the chronic low-level pain, but very little helps with the pain once intercostals are so tight and unhappy that I start breaking ribs. I do find that stretching by back every day, before and after exercise, helps a bit too.
