cold turned into severe bronchitis

Hi all, I had a cold last week---the usual---coughing--mucus, sneezing, stuffy nose....misery It has now turned into Bronchitis and I cannot breath. There is a heat wave in NYC which is making breathing outside (not an option). I am currently on a azithromycin (500 mg) once a day. Xopenex, spiriva, pulmozyme, vest. My pft's are in the 40's. I sooooo didnt need this. I cannot leave the a/c. My lungs are full of inflammation, tighness, and mucus. I am sooooo depressed and deflated.
Please, anyone who might have advice..I called my CF center but I know my doc will only prescibe me what I am already on. Has anyone taken prednisone for bronchitis? Should I start this?
Also, please give me ANY pointers on helping build my immune system. I get sick just looking at someone who is sick. I am really at the end of my rope here.

When this has happened in the past to DS, I've usually called the clinic. The last time it happened despite being on Tobi, Keflex and zithromax at the time DS still got sick, so his doctor prescribed Cipro.

Wow I could have written this post...had somewhat of a cold and then got stuck inside when the heat wave struck. I've been upping my pulmozyme to 2x/day, and doing an extra vest and xopenex treatment after work (I normally do morning and night). My doc says I could use xopenex up to every 2 hrs if I need to (the dose that I sometimes need it the hospital), but I've been doing pretty good with 3x/day. I've found that it really helps me to deal with the humidity if I have to go somewhere. Otherwise, spend as much time in the a/c, boring and limiting as that is.

I have had good luck with adding prednisone during the summer for a few weeks at a time. It gives me the strength I need to deal with the humidity and reduces the inflamation/chest tightness wonderfully. I love it, but it does have the nasty potential to kill one's immune system (which might be an issue for you) and if I stay on it for more than a couple weeks, I don't feel like I'm getting as much benefit out of it. It might not be a bad thing to try for the short term. I was actually going to ask my doc when I see him next week since I've been having so much trouble the past couple of weeks. Good luck to you! Feel better!

hi all, thanks for the well wishes and advice. I am still sick...hit two weeks today. i spent the morning on my bathroom floor hunched over throwing up mucus and gasping for air. This has been a horrible infection. I am taking the prednisone but only 20 mgs a day. My doc also put me on 750 mgs of cipro. I am afraid of all the side effects of pred.. I hear about. This infection is strange. It is all inflammation and tightness. I litterally cannot breath and I have nevr had this happen. I couldnt blow out a candle if
i tried.

have you ever been diagnosed with asthma? the inflammation/tightness sounds like when my asthma flares up. have they every tried prescribing asthma meds? maybe advair would help, its a daily inhaled steriod but i've never had side effects from it like i get when on prednisone. hope you feel better soon!
