Coughed a black piece up

I am currently in the hospital for a tune up. I caught a really bad cold and it went straight to my lungs within two days and turned into pneumonia. Well last night I was up all night coughing my head off. Well not really lol but it sure felt like it.
After coughing gagging and almost throwing up I coughed up alot of mucus. My concern is that I looked at it because they always want to know the color. I noticed a little black piece mixed in with the mucus. I pulled it out seperatly to get a clearer picture of what it was. I still do not know what it was. It was small maybe the size of a grain of rice, almost look like mouse droppings. I saved it to show the Dr (fellow...rolls eyes) and he said he has never seen anything like it before. I haven't seen my CF dr since I have been here so I cant ask him.
Do any of you have a clue what it was. I put it in a little medicine cup and if I shook the cup it sounded like a little rock was in there. Very strange and its kind of freaking me out.
Please let me know what you think it is. I am sure someone here knows what I am describing (at least I hope someone does).
Thanks

Could it be a dried out mucus plug from one of your small airways? I have coughed up near black chunks before while on ivs...

Just a thought, hmmm. Let us know if you figure it out! I want to see a picture of it

Yeah, Andrew coughs those up often...they look like little dried up worms that you would find on your driveway. Definitey mucus plugs. He has coughed them up during pfts before and our RT has told me they are plugs. It's good that you are getting the out!

Feel better soon, Kristina!

I wish I could post pictures of it but the brilliant fellow tossed it in the trash after looking at it ugh!
It makes since that it was a plug it just made me nervous because I've never had one that look like that. I have massive hemoptysis chronically so I guess it could be a plug from left over blood. I love this site hearing others experiences and opinion sure makes you feel like you are not alone. Thanks!!!

Didn't someone here cough up what they described as hard little bb like mucus plugs when they were in a clinical trial. Could be a hardened mucus plug with dried blood.

mandy (dramamama) actually was the one to cough up ALOT of those after starting a serious anti-inflammatory diet regimen. It was a very good sign for her and I hope it will be for you too. She got alot of them and took them in and her doctor said they normally only see them post-mortam (they are normally deep and lots inflammation around them) sounds like a very productive cough you had.

yes, I believe I used the word "schrapnel" to describe the dozen or so plugs that came out at exactly 10:30am (I dosed at 9am) each morning for the first 2 wks I was on Vertex 770 Ph. 2B. I believe it is this reason that participants see a 10-15% increase in their FEV1.
