Cycling

Anyone into cycling for fitness? If so, what kind? How far, fast, and often? And what do you do in winter or when you're sick to keep from deconditioning? Anybody compete? Any CFR problems? I had to give up running this year for something lower-impact, so I'm kind of new to two wheels and interested in hearing others' experiences. I'm riding about 12-15 miles five days a week (flat roads and trails, pretty easy pace with some harder intervals) and so far so good except for some back and wrist aches and one scary dehydration incident. HELLO, I DO NOT HAVE C/F BUT MY BRO WHO IS 23 DOES. I RIDE BIKES , MOUNTAIN/ ROAD BUT NOTHING PROFESSIONAL. I AM WONDERING IF U HAVE C/F, HOW R U ABLE TO RIDE. MY BROTHER HAS ABSOLUTELY NO ENERGY, BARELY ENOUGH TO GO TO THE STORE FOR FOOD. THERE IS NO WAY HE COULD BIKE, HELL HE GETS WINDED JUST WALKING, IT DOES'T MAKE SENSE TO ME......................HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO IF YOU HAVE C/F?

To anonymous who called someone an idiot.....who are you referring to the one whose brother has CF? If so try explaining your disgust instead of name calling. If it wasnt directed to that post then which?

THANK YOU FOR THE IDIOT COMMENT. THANK YOU, BESIDES, I DON'T BELIEVE I WAS TALKING TO YOU, UNLESS IT WAS YOU THAT WROTE THE POST, BUT I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT AN UNEDUCATED MOUTH WOULD THINK TO. ANYWAYS, HIS IS FOR QUOFF. THANK YOU FOR WRITING BACK. YOU ARE DOING MUCH BETTER THAN MY BRO WHOM IS 23 WITH C/F, MY ONLY SIBLING, WHOM I LOVE TO DEATH, AND WORRY ABOUT ON A DAILY BASIS...... KEEP UP THE BIKING, AS WILL I, AND ALWAYS REMEMBER LIFE IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION......PEACE BE WITH YOU.......JOY.

To the one with the brother with CF... every CF case is so ridiculously different. There are many CFers who are healthy as horses, and run, bike, play sports, etc.

My reply is directed to Kevin, who originated this section of the forum.I don't cycle as a sport where I live now, but I used to hop on my 10 speed when I didn't have a car twenty years ago. Where I live, my major form of transportation was walking or bicycling. I never had gotten the money for the 10 speed I wanted (I prefer an ATB over an MTB), but I'm sure I could find places to tour with it.It doesn't snow here, but the winters get pretty brisk. Until an injury, I was involved heavily in martial arts. I didn't like jogging, and I had knee problems from one of my martial arts injuries, anyway.Since my injury, I've had to think of something else to do. I was contemplating on swimming for fitness, yet didn't want to leave any other ideas out. It's good to hear you enjoy cycling. I know about the hydration, I did it once in one of my martial arts classes--Scary!Unfortunately, if I cycled, my course would contain intervals of stop lights, oncoming traffic, and intersections with no stop signs (or ones everyone ignores!)I'd have to do a little more research as to where I could take an easier trail to enjoy. I'm keeping cycling as an idea, and I think my wife would enjoy it, too!

I am in the hospital right now and i ride my bike for about 10-20 mins and it really wears me out. i have to lay down for about another 10mins just to cool off. But the PT said i had to keep in shape and get my heart rate going around 140. i can get my heart rate going around 150 just by playing my X Box. so to tell you the truth i hate riding my bike.

Hey, thanks for the responses. I stopped checking after awhile. Nope, not from Helena (Montana?). From LA originally but now live in IL. I do drink lots of water, but I don't know if I could chug salt water! I got a new (used) road bike in Sept., then it got stolen, so now I'm bikeless and broke. I'll probable buy a bike before winter when I get the cash, but I'm not sure about riding DURING the winter up here. Do any other CFers ride/run outside in Northern winter? Anyway, till I get another bike I'm going to the gym.

Hello, im 16 and i have CF i live outside Seattle WA and i do not cycle but i run year round 6 days a week and twice a day 5 days a week during school. I run 20 minutes in the morning before school with my friends also on the cross country team which for us is just under 3 miles followed by about 7 miles after school so about a 50 mile week of running is normal. Our winters here arent snowy and they dont get real cold but commonly its in the 40's and raining and thats annoying but whatever u get used to it. Running helps keep me healthy in my lungs so its really important to me, it also helps that my best friend is the fastest returning runner in the state so he keeps me out there running with him all the time even though im not that great of a runner (relative to everyone else in the high school state). Im proud that even with CF i am able to run under an 18 minute 5k and ive been under 5 minutes in the mile twice before also. All i can say is that if u have CF and u dont exercise u need to. No matter what it is or how bad ur CF is exercising, even a little bit is always good for ur lungs.

hi,
i just wanted to reply to your question... my name is jessica and i live in NYC. i am 28 years old. i work out and do cardio every day.
i am sorry to hear that your brother is unable to do some of hese things. i believe you mentioned that he has a difficult time walking to the store and back.
cystic fibrosis varies with every patient. some people are very sick. some people arent. i guess i am fortunate because i am very active and my doctors say i have a normal life expectancy. thats why this disease is so hard to find a cure and or treatments because what works for one patient might not work for another.
can i make a suggestion: have your brother speak with his doctor. see if there is a pulmanary rehab center he can go to. this center is for people with respitory diseases and there are physical therapists who monitor patients indivisually and help them bulid up their strength. even if it is to walk on a treamill for 5 minutes.
i believe and i am sure there are many who will back me up on this, the more you use your lungs... with excercising and breathing, the stronger and better you will be!
good luck to your brother

Hi Kevin,

I'm a cyclist (43 with CF) and have ridden in a MS150 (last year, 150 miles in 2 days), rode in a 26 mile ride yesterday and generally ride 50 miles or so a week. This year, I plan to ride in the "Sunflowers to Roses" ride for cancer which is 65 miles and the MS150 again. It's a great sport and I hope you enjoy it.... I'm not very fast, but I get the job done and it is fun! Good luck in your riding!

I used to bike all the time when I was a kid and teenager. I've just recently joined a gym and they offer a studio cycling class, so I think I'm gonna try that out, see if I can't get back into cycling.

YEH! BIKERS!

I ride 3+ hours a day, probably 5-10 miles in that time. I use it for working out as well. Wheelies build upper strength ALOT. REALLY easy on my knees. I can't run for more that 3-4 blocks before my knees feel like they're in a vice.

Here's what I ride:

I have front brakes and a spider on mine though. I plan on getting pictures, but my camera is dead.

I recently competed in a 10km charity ride for cf, next year I am planning on doing the 30km (sorry dont know the conversion to miles)

My uncle is in the process of doing up his ex racing bike for me to use, because I am wanting to get into cycling full on, and hopefully racing...my legs will be the determining factor on that one!!

Once I know I am going to stick with it, I can splurge out and buy myself a good quality racing bike, I just dont want to waste the grand or more if Im not going to stick with it!

good luck with it all!
