I am soooooo pissed off right now, my blood is boiling. I filed for SSDI about a month ago and received my denial letter in the mail today. I am so frustrated with the government and how they conduct their so called reviews. Ive had no say in any part of the process, no one every called and asked me anything nor was I given an opportunity to tell anyone what I am goin through. The letter is a standard denial letter thats probably sent to everyone without even providing a reason why. I spent over $100getting medical records and sending them everything they could possibly need to make a sound decision. Has anyone else been through this process??? Ihave contacted Beth the CF Attorney and am waiting to hear back. Unfortunately I made too much money last year {even though Im not working now} to get any financial assiatance for representation. Im having to borrow money from family and friends to get by. Any help or suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.

I am in the final stage of trying to get SSDI disabled adult child. I have been denied 3 times I think. The first one is always a denial, or so I was told by my disability attorney. I have not paid anything to my attorney, she will get 15% of my backpay, if and/or when I am approved. Definitely go through with the appeals process. Even if you are still able to work it's important to get approved so you can be classified under the americans with disabilities act. I keep getting fired bc of getting sick and I really need the health insurance, that's why I'm applying. Don't fret over the first denial, keep pushing forward. The wait time right now is insane, I have been trying to get it for over two years now and still have another 8 months or so before I go before a judge.

Ya they usually deny the first time, your federal representative's office helps with these things.
Best of luck

Kate....are you serious 2 years????? wow thats crazy. What is your situation like??? {If you dont mind me asking} My PFT's are still in the 80's but ever since I got diagnosed with the Non-Tuberculosis Mycobacterium Ive been sick constantly. Ive had to go to work with my IV infused and keep it under my vest at work since I continuously exhaust all my time. Ive had 4 IV's and two hospitalizations in the past year one IV course for 6 weeks and yet "I dont meet the qualifications for Disability" I just dont get it. You tell me who's going to hire a person with CF. Get real SSI try living in our shoes just one day. Im sooooo over the BS. I live in Florida so its even worse here. There's plenty of people {lazy} utilizing the governments funding who are perfectly capable of working and contributing. Free health insurance, free food stamps, housing assistance and of course collecting SSI. Ughhhhhhhhhhhh

I was approved on my first try, and my fev1 was also at least 80% back then. The social security administration has a list of things that will qualify a CF patient to SSDI, and I was able to show in my medical records that I had a certain number of episodes of hemoptysis in the past 12 months, as well as a certain number of rounds of IV. I also showed a pattern of getting sick every fall, after I went back to school and was exposed to all my students. I wrote a very detailed description of my daily life with treatments, exhaustion, etc, and made sure to point out the exact ways that I met the requirements that THEY created. My doctor also wrote a very strong letter about why she felt I needed to stop working. All that combined with a phone interview during which I coughed a ton was enough to get me approved.

I was also told everyone gets denied first time around, but I'm proof that it's not necessarily true. I applied eleven years ago, so I don't remember where I found the SSA guidelines for CF, but I'm sure Beth Sufian could tell you. I have a feeling that if you can show how you meet their guidelines, they cant deny you. Im surprised you were denied with the number of times you needed IV this past year. I'm so sorry you are having to fight so hard. I hope you can get a quick appeal.

I won't stop working until I have to, Fev1 is 28 lowest when sick and 43 for highest after 3 week course. I work 40 hours a week if not in hospital. I think the constant activitie on my feet help me, but where I work is not the best, a highley shopped Wal-Mart, going on 17 years with them.

My FEV1 is around 75 these days. But with my immune deficiency I am constantly getting sick. I get bronchitis about once every two months and pneumonia about twice a year. Pretty much just can't keep a job bc everytime I get sick and have to miss work, on dr's orders even, my employer fires me. We are a no fault state, so they can get rid of me with no reason at all. Not even to mention they won't let me do my treatments at work and without them I sound like I'm coughing up a lung halfway through the work day. They also just made a mistake and took away my food stamps, gotta love gov't assistance <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I highly doubt this is true. There are many people who get it the first time. Please stop spreading missinformation.
