Diabetics -- what do you do with your sharps?

this might be a question i should have asked long ago... what do you do with your needles and syringes?

my method is sort of ghetto. i put them in a plastic container like an old apple juice bottle, and when it is full i cap it and tape around the lid and some around the rest of the container. i know this probably isn't the best way. how else is there to handle this? it seems like any plastic container is vulnerable to being broken when it is smashed up in the garbage truck or otherwise compacted along the way to the landfill.

ideas?

Just like Lisa said. Definitely use a sharps container. Biohazard waste (needles) cannot go in the trash. I get my containers from my doctor, and then I give them back to my doctor when they're full. I'm not diabetic, so I don't have as much waste, so a large container will last me a long time.

I WANT TO KNOW ALSO!

I got my original sharps container from my local pharmacy years ago & they told me I could go to my local hospital/lab to have it emptied. I have yet to need to do it because when I get home IV's I also get a sharps container (same size) that comes with a return pre paid box to send it back in.

So I just I wait until one is full & send THAT one. BUT now that I test multile times a day it might fill up faster. What is probably saving me space is not using syringes. I use the Navalog pen....love this thing <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">~!

So try contacting a local hospital & see if they will do it for you. Let us know, huh?
