Doctors - #1 MRSA carriers

I go to a CF clinic in Salt Lake City and have this problem when I am admitted to the hospital. My nurses will follow all the precautions the first couple times they come into my room and then they stop doing them. The same with the Resident doctors. I don't have a problem with the pulmonologists or the respiratory techs but it seems like I have a lot of problems with the others. It's irritating.

I do not have this problem with my CF clinic. If I did, I would say something immediately. So you injure their pride. Big deal. It's YOUR life they are mucking about with. I also do not spend any time in hospitals. I pretty much refuse to at this point since they are walking cesspools of germs and I cant sleep at all. I dont see the benefit for my particular situation.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote><em>Originally posted by: <strong>dream2live</strong></em> I am currently in the hospital, but this time I went to the hospital that specializes in CF (its a teaching hospital). So far, everyone has been following protocol about gowning up, masking up, etc. The hospital I go to in my hometown, they are finally "addressing" the problem with MRSA. BUT, the doctors are still the worse when it comes to following infection control. I just found out today I have 3 strains of Pseudomonas. When I get back home, and have to be around any doctor, I will definitely speak my mind about infection control, and remind them that as a doctor to use their hippocratric oath!!!!!<img alt="" /></end quote>
Having many strains of pseudo might not be a bad thing, since they have to compete for food in your lungs, it probably helps avoiding a more resistant strain from taking over. If it were to be alone, it would be free to take all the space it wants. Now, not so much. Having other strains if you ever have a multiresistant strain is probably very helpful. If works just like how you might get an infection from good bacteria when you take antibiotics that kill the bacteria that usually keep them in check.

My old hospital was pretty good about it, and my new one? Not so much. (which is interesting because it's also a teaching hospital). Although, the times you see really everyone gown and glove are when interns are making rounds with their attendings. I've had to ask people to leave, gown and glove, etc. I had a nurse who barged into my room ready to change my picc dressing without anything on! (besides gloves, which she put on in the hallway so who knows what she was touching!) Uhhhhh? What?

The thing I find particularly fascinating, is that in the new hospital the only people who 99% of the time, consistently follow the cautionary signs are housekeeping. Go housekeeping!

I would also like to add, that I culture two different strands of MRSA... want to guess how I caught them? I went in for a stay with just PA came out with two different strands. Woo to the freakin' hoo. After that, I learned awfully quick how to speak up.

I also love the line, when doctors say (why they're not gowning/gloving up) "Well, it's mainly for my benefit, so..." Or, "I'm going to be super fast, just pop in and out" .... Mmhm, okay doc tell that to my poor lungs now fighting two different MRSA strands! Put that gown on!
