Does anyone go south for the winter?

I was wondering how many of you go to warmer climates for the winter?

I used to spend most winters away in FL with relatives when I was growing up. Not really for health reasons but bc I was invited to be w family. But the funny thing is looking back I never got sick in the winter and rarely got colds. It could have been youth too.

Me and hubby are thinking of buying a fixer upper home in the FL keys. We go there every year to stay at my sisters house and it is the best break from the winter. Every year my tolerance for cold gets worse and worse and I can barely be outside.
I recently had a doc appt and my pfts went from 73 down to 53....there is no infection present, xray and mri looked improved from last time. The docs felt it was purely asthmatic.
At the end of every winter I seem to get very sick even with compliance, and tuneups.

For people that do this, what benefits have you noticed?

Do you think that there's a link between, for lack of a better phrase...'living longer' or improved lung function and being in a warmer climate?

I don't go south for the winter, but I should. The thought of that is alluring all by itself. I haven't noticed yet a problem <i>outside</i> during colder weather, just inside. The heat seems to bother me. At my old place, it was central heating, now it's forced air. When I was a kid it didn't bother me at all. I'm seriously toying with the idea of moving permanently to a warmer climate, although I have to get a lot of things in order first.

I definetly think there is some kind of link between improved lung function and living in a warmer climate. In the summer time, I have almost no problems with my CF- it's like I don't even have it, just as long as I keep doing my vest. Now, every morning I just sit in front of my computer vibrating for an hour on the vest so I'm not so congested.

I don't. IMHO - it is probably a perception. There are cystics born in the warmer climates who have just as many problems as those up north, and there are those born in colder climates who don't have as many problems as some born in warmer climates. But I do recall that as a kid, my doctors at the time said that a dryer climate was better, but then when I got here to AZ, they said watch out, because the dryer climate drys out the mucus which can cause other issues. I don't have any improved lung function as compared to living in the northeast, no difference.

Forced hot air sucks! When I built my home in NY, I put in central air for the summer, but base board hot water for winter. I'm back to forced hot air in AZ. I think the ducts from forced hot air are an issue, they hold dust and junk in them. Get them cleaned out if you can.

What is right for you? That should be what matters. If you perceive that you feel better in FL., then head on south - snowbird !

(As we say in AZ - So many snow birds, so little freezer space!)

no, christian, but i <i>moved </i>to the south so that i wouldn't have to deal with winters as much. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> (north carolina.) i was always getting sick in the winter, and summer were good months for me. moving down here was a good choice for me, but i can't say that is because of the weather. there are so many factors! and as you probably know, there is no scientific proof that CFers in warmer climates do better.
