Does skin always taste salty?

My 6 month old baby has some symptoms of CF, but his skin doesn't taste salty. The doc says there's no point in testing him because of that. Can someone have CF without their skin tasting salty? Thanks!<br>

What are your baby's symptoms of CF? No I think you can have CF and not always have salty tasting skin, especially in a baby who may not sweat much and or may still have some function in the CFTR mutation. Not all doctors are up to date on Cystic Fibrosis information so if you feel something is not right in your baby you need to look further even if that means switching to a doctor that will listen to you.

Some symptoms of CF are failure to thrive, constipation, diahrea, oily stools, wheezing, chronic cough, sinus issues, frequent lung infections. However, CF is a very individual disease meaning not every person with CF has all the same symptoms or issues. You can get more info that is reliable at The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's website at www.cff.org

If you think there is a chance your child has CF, you need to find an accreditited CF center, cff.org has a search function.

Your doctor frankly doesn't have a clue, tasty salty is NOT a medical test by any means. Yes, patients with CF tend to excrete more salt in their sweat; but not much as babies.

Go see a CF doctor, they will either do a sweat test (where they cause the baby to sweat on a small patch of skin and test for salt--no tasting involved) or if they think it is likely CF they may skip and just order a blood test that will be yes/no.

Good luck.
