Dr Phil

I think a lot of us think that 'yeah, I would like to be an organ donor' but don't actually take the time to take the necessary steps to solidify it. I'm sure Dr. Phil had thought of it before but never followed through to actually do it. If I'm not mistaken he did say before bedtime, tonight or something to that effect he would be signing up to be an organ donor.
I was happy for the publicity. I know this is hard for some of you to believe, but he does have a huge number of people that like and watch his show so I'm sure many, many people heard about CF and saw the outcome of organ donation. The only thing I wish he would have done was to say in more detail how they are feeling now compared to before tx to make a bigger impact.
Hope

Like I said I'm not a Dr. Phil fan, but anyone who can and will get the word out about CF to people who dont know a damn thing about it, is ok in my book. He does have so many fans out there that dont know about this disease and now they know and maybe now they will go and be an organ donor, and if you need a transplant and one of these people that are fans of Dr. Phil is your donor that wouldnt be unless he/she watched his show I myself as a mother of a CF little boy feel grateful to him.

I'm just using this post as an example. First off, Sean made a joke. Say it with me. J O K E. All of you people who feel the same way need to lighten up, Sean isn't going to go out and purpously put Dr. Phil in the way of a flaming cement truck! So relax! Second, I disagree about the whole thing. Dr. Phil (and other daytime TV shows) purpously pick these kinds of things for one simple reason; ratings. They run out of things to talk about, so they look for something 'out of the ordinary.' I seriously doubt it had anything to do with genuinely wanting to help spread the word about CF. He just ran out of other topics, sad as it is.

As far as people becoming organ doners just because they watched this show, don't fool yourself. Many people that I know who watch Dr. Phil are people who need therapy themselves. I'm mainly speaking about my boyfriend's mother, who hates my guts for whatever reason (never done a thing to her) and blatenly said to him one day, "Why would you ever want to be with her? She'll probably die before you get married anyway." She's a huge Dr. Phil fan. So yeah. No one like that is going to give a flying crap about becoming a donor. Instead she probably just sat down on her big butt with a bowl of potato chips looking for some entertainment because there was nothing else on. And after it was over, she probably just changed the channel and didn't give it a second thought. I'm willing to bet there are more people like her out there than there are people who really care enough to do anything about it.

In short, don't glorify Dr. Phil because he put a CFer on his show. It doesn't really mean a thing. It would be more impressed if I saw it in the news more often, or there were advertisements for it like there are for cancer and AIDS. But please, for the love of god, don't give Dr. Phil more credit than he really deserves.

Believe me I'm not one to glorify Dr. Phil I dont like him either. I understand about the ratings thing and I agree with you. I'm just saying anysay anyhow that CF is talked about or advertised just to get the word out is great I dont care who does it or what their own reasons for doing so are. Just getting it our there is the key word here! I know it was just a joke, but I feel bad for the clowns. lol

Eh...I guess you're right. Something is better than nothing, I suppose. Don't know about the clowns, though *remembers Steven (sp?) King's book "IT"*

i think it was a great segment. wanna know how i was finally diagnosed. my mom sat down one day when she would have normally been doing chores while i was napping and happened to watch a tv show, not a news show but a talk show and they happened to talk about cf. when she saw that everything just clicked. now im not saying that this segment was going to do that for someone else. and yes there are more people out there just wanting entertainment and watch the dr phil show just to tell themselves someone else out there is worse than themselves. but there are a handfull of inqusitive people out there who just might, not holding my breath, but just might want to know more about what cf is and organ donation and go online and look. i agree to i wish they had talked more about how they feel now compared to before transplant but if anyone was paying attention to the before pictures you can really tell they look alot healthier now....but maybe thats just me because i know what to look for and how a cfer looks when their really sick...i dunno. but still this was spreading the word about cf and organ donation, even though it wasnt a big in depth discussion like i wish i could have seen..its better than nothing. thats just how i look at it. and no im not a big day time tv person so dont think i am defending dr phil or any other show.

Like Terri said- Just get the word out there, I don't care who, how or why! One step at a time, it has to start somewhere.

I'm a little surprised that the general reaction here to the segment is positive. I thought he missed a great opportunity to speak in more detail about cf. I was glad for the mention of organ donation, but where was the mention of CFF or the web address...? I think it's great that he's helping these two and giving the wedding they deserve. But, he could have done more to help so many others.

Sean, I wasnt just talking of the Dr. Phil comment. I'm not that shallow. I just feel you reach a bit to far to think some of the things you say are funny. You don't know me as I don't know you but I'm always smiling trying to make people laugh i person but the things you say at the times you say them on alot of threads, seem to me like an attention getter. Like you need glorified attention. In the middle of alot of thread someone is trying to discuss a serious subject to them and you pop on with something stupid. But yes, that's just MY opinion. You can say anything you want as it is a free speech group.
I think for a start the show was good. Yes it could have showed alot more aspects than it did. But it was only one segment 15-20 minutes. So for a start hopefully of many more tv shows to follow suit, it was good.

I have a dark, witty, sardonic, jaded sense of humor. I find humor in most things. I have enough attention from my 6 dogs, a fiancee, a mother, 2 sisters, and a whole gigantic assortment of friends and acquiantances. If I ever require attention off of a message board, please shoot me in the head. If you don't share any of my views, or feel I go "overboard", well good for you. It's people like you and I that turn into different factions on an island with no laws like the book Lord of The Flies. I'm pretty jaded when it comes to CF in general, though I try and remain helpful. Obviously a few people on here (from the PM's I received and the replies in this thread and others) have found some of my comments funny and they laughed. I'm sure there are others (including you) who don't find anything I say enjoyable. You also have to understand that the internet is rife with people who like to make comments that bare little attachments who they would genuinely feel in real life. Would I seriously like to see Dr. Phil get hit by a flaming cement truck stuffed with clowns stuffed with plastique going over a cliff? Well maybe, but he has a family, and noone wants to lose a loved one, etc. Are you new to the internet Becky? You seem to take things at face value, and a tad too serious. Do you sit in your car and yell at your radio when listening to talk radio and you hear someone be sick/silly? I think they are selling sarcasm/silly recognition chips at radio shack for $19.99 for the holidays, and that includes installation!

why do people have to put their two sense in when they don't like what somebody else wrote?///////// WHO GIVES A RATS A**, WHAT SOMEONE WROTE, THAT IS THEM, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE IT! i am so sick of people comming on here telling someone else they don't appreciate their comments!!!!! TOUGH S***, DEAL WITH IT, there has been numerous times where i read something, and i didn't agree with, but the last thing i did was to write about how i thought that person has problem!!!!!!!!!! Becky, keep your dam* comments to your self!!!!!!!!! who cares what sean, or any body writes!!!!!!

My sister watched the segment (she is a huge Dr. Phil fan) and called me last night asking all kinds of questions. She told me that her and her husband are going to make sure they sign up to be organ donors, and their friends. She lives in TX so far away and she has never seen my son sick at all, and doesn't know much about CF. She was shocked to learn how bad it can be. There are more people out there like my sister than don't have the knowledge of CF. If more people can get the word out the better, I hope he does do a follow up in a year or so.

My mother saw the episode of 7th Heaven the other night & no idea that transplants can happen. I never approached that subject with her because she gets very emotional & its just not something I think she can discuss. I still didnt get into a real discussion with her except for me to say that it isnt a cure all which is what she was making it out to be. I told her that a person still has CF so all the rest of CF applies in addition to rejection worries etc so its not like you go in/out & boom you are all better. So needless to say I busted her bubble. I am sure the topic will come up during my family christmas where I can talk about it with others which will keep my Mom in check.....LOL

It's amazing to me how ignorant our own families can be about the disease. My Mom had a reality check when Queer Eye for the Straight Guy had an episode on with the guy that had CF and a transplant. Let's face it, there are more and more shows at least mentioning the illness and if it doesn't clue in the rest of the world the way we want it to, at least our own families are getting a wake up call!

I guess we're all different types. I need someone like Dr Phil to tell me like it is, not sugar coat it.
I have heard the way to get rid of phobia's is to meet them head-on, but that's easier said than done I don't like to be in water over my head, so I'm not sure throwing me in the deep end of the pool is the answer; possibly, but I sure wouldn't enjoy it (if I didn't drown first!).
Hope

Hey guys guess what? The amount of people who will watch your show is what lines the greenbacks in your pocket. That's just how American TV is, and i'm pretty sure it applies to any countries TV. I'm all personally down for exposure. I generally agree with "Bad news is still good news" mentality, especially when dealing with a disease who doesn't strike down every rich second cousin and their nephews. With that said, sorry, some people that responded to my comments here scare me. Some scare me because they are so damn Naive in general. On top of that, they are *EXTREMELY* naive to the internet in general. I agree with opinion, I totally agree with dissenting opinion, but people who can actually read my original comments in this thread and say "Yeah well I really like the guy, if you don't feel the same way, you hurt my pee spot, and I want to cry". How ignorant is THAT? Listen guys. I mentioned how I disliked Dr. Phil, in the context of creative imagination, and in that same context, how i'd like to creativly see him die. Now in case you guys don't have a monthly subscription to "Sarcasm/humor monthly", and might possibly have another genetic mutation aside from CF, with regards to not seeing *IT WAS ME BEING SILLY*, well let me take this moment to tell you...(clears throat)...*IT WAS ME BEING SARCASTIC/SILLY*!!

If some of you seriously didn't see any of that, well...You either are brand new to the internet, not the brightest bulb in the drawer, or need some good locally produced chicken noodle soup. Take your pick. Some of you guys might qualify for all 3.

I have to say that I dont get your sense of humour. I personally dont find it funny, but that is just me. There is a lot that the general public enjoys that I look at & ??? why so I figure I am just the odd ball. My Dad had a really dry sense of humour, but it didnt seem malicious or hurtful, just dumb......Even tho you say your humour is meant to be of a sarcastic/silly nature the only thing that I can think of is all the boys in high school trying to get attention by saying/being stupid and reminding me of lack of maturity or brain power. You seem to criticise those of us who find you offensive. Well just as you have the right to state what you consider worthwhile in your sarcastic world, we have the right to ??? how/why you see it has funny. So with an attempt of being sarcastic, but not received well by all I will say.................NOTHING MORE!

I applaud him for doing anything with cystic fibrosis of course, but he's just an all around twit. The skits mad TV do about him he deserves 100%. His condescending nature alone when he talks to people is grounds enough to wish ill will upon him.

Oh, and you said Dr Phil was condescending, look at your last post.....
