Emily has stopped eating/ Miralax questions

Our daughter has had ongoing horrible stomach problems so last March we finally had a gastrografin enema done. No structural problems, just a lot of stool backed up and the procedure itself pretty much took care of that.

We are now on a "maintenance" dose of Miralax. We have adjusted the dose at various times but right now it is 1/2 capful every other day.

I hate to have her on it all the time because it may be masking other issues - like should we change her enzyme dosage. But it does seem to keep her regular and the couple of times we have stopped it altogether, she inevitably gets backed up again. And we have gotten to where we can tell by just looking at her belly. So we keep her on it, keep a poop diary, and stay on the lookout for changes.

As others have said, it is gentle and only caused explosiveness when she was getting too much of it. I really hope Emily gets to feeling better.

LOL- can picture the little boy behavior there! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

Emily keeps trying to duck into the bathroom without me knowing it- the smell wafting down the hall alerted me to her being in there Sat. The cf nurse had to promise Emily a new frog (they have cute little frog toys at clinic she loves- pencil toppers, hoppers, fuzzy ones, she never knows what kind of frog the nurse will bring her!) just to get her to describe her tummy aches while I was on the phone with her! She HATES everyone having to know about the poop!

eta> I missed your post until after I posted, Dana. Thank you for your input. I'm glad your daughter tolerates it ok but sorry she has such a chronic issue with this. I hope it doesn't become a recurrent problem with Emily.

Do you have a Gastroenterologist at your CF Clinic? Maybe he or she could be of some help. Like the others have said, Miralax is a very safe medication. It just adds moisture to the stool to help you go easier. I personally use it twice a day under the care of my GI. Impacted stool could also cause the symptoms you are talking about. I hope you Emily feels better soon.

I hated that too growing up (talking about poop) especially, "Do your stools float or sink?"

Tell Emily when I was 7 that I had a bowel obstruction [due to scar tissue from muconium illeus (spelling?) but they didnt put mucomyst after the surgery so I was still plugged up] and when I finally went I couldnt flush the toilet! It stank to high heaven and was not pretty and I couldnt even flush it till ALL the doctors looked at it! So embarassing.

To me, the "dark brownish, greenish slime" sounds like mucus build up, just because slime makes me think of mucus.

Good Luck with everything too!
