Hi all. Ok ive been taking creon all my life and creon 10000 probably 10+ years. Im now 26 and from about age 16 I have suffered with severe cramps and stomach ache, it was that bad I would have to curl into a ball to ease the pain. I was passing nasty wind and my number 2s left a bad smell, sorry tmi! I also felt bloated. I weigh 10 and half stone and 5'5 and have never been underweight and only been in hospital 3 times since diagnosed at 6 months old. So about 7 months ago I kinda started to forget taking my enzymes and I noticed how I felt good in myself. So I decided to stop taking them altogether. All the above symptoms changed for the better. Last week I decided to give the enzymes another shot and I spent all weekend in the bathroom and passed so much wind. Im so confused as to what to do?? I havent spoke to doctors and didnt even tell them I stopped taking them as this was my own personal choice. I actually dont thing I could go back to feeling how I did when taking enzymes. It was awful. Without taking the enzymes my weights hasnt deteriorated, I am maintaining it and my stools are 1 - 2 per day and dont smell. I know this topic is disgusting...my concerns are...am I damaging my inside ie bowl liver pancrease by not taking them or is it a good thing not to take these??? The only other meds I take is zitromax and vitamins. Any advice?? Ps ive a hospital appointment the end of this month and plan on discussing all with my dr and diatician. Thanks folks and sorry about the length of this message. Also in sept I had my annual assesment and all my vitamin levels are perfect so im obviously obsorbing the vitamins just fine without the enzymes

Alfie,

YOu don't say how many your taking, that could be an issue. Also CF'ers can get stopped up easier with the gunk that gets in digestive tract as well as dehydration. My first thing I would do is contact doctor.

Thank you gorf. It really depends on what I eat or how high in fat the food is. A normal potato meat veg and gravy dinner would be 4 enzymes or fast food buger and chips 6 enzymes. Im going to discuss all this at the end of the month.

You might ask your CF Doctor about daily use of Miralax. You might also ask him/her about Bacterial Overgrowth.

OMG.. I am not the only one!!!!! I have had the same problem. I stopped taking my meds because all of this was happening to me to. A lot of feed back I get from people is that maybe you can adjust your dosage. I personally don't take any digestive meds right now because of the reasons you don't. You should talk to your doctor because it can be very serious that you're not taking them. I don't have any advise, except to talk to your doctor about the dosage, but I'm so glad I'm not the only one that has had this problem. I hope you find a way to be happy with your meds and take them.

I've never taken Creon. I don't believe it's even available in Canada where I live. Here we get enzymes with the brand name Cotazym, and I take three 20mg capsules with every meal and I have never felt bloated because of them. Perhaps see if that brand is available in the UK?

My son is on Creon 12, 000. We base his dosage on actual fat grams of the meal rather than the general dosage of 4 for meals and 3 for snacks because he was getting too many in a day. Our dietician has told us not to give more than 4 in a 3 hour period. You might be getting too much based on the fat gram ratio. Definitely discuss it with your doc and dietician. You might need to switch enzyme brands.
