My 4 month cf/son has been taking Ultrese enzymes since he was 3 weeks old. He is 4 months and 16 lbs., his dietician asked me to go from 1/2 cap per feeding to 1 cap per feeding. I tried and he started throwing up after evry feeding so now we are back to 1/2 cap per feeding. Now he is starting to have oily and ropey stools. Any advice????? I am scared he is not getting enough enzymes.

You could try a different strength of Ultrase or try a whole different brand of enzymes all together if he just doesn't seem to adjust to the current dosage.

I haven't heard of too many enzymes causing vomiting. Both of my children had reflux problems when they were infants. Is your child taking Prevacid? It really seemed to help my kids with their coughing/vomiting. Zantac wasn't strong enough.

I don"t know overthere but in France, stools are analyzed (grease rate) to adjust the quantity of enzymes. Are there such exams in the US ?
We have the stools analyzed every 4 weeks or so for our 21 month-old-daughter. The enzymes have alwmost been adjusted after every analysis.
I don't think the reflux could be caused by the enzymes (I'm not MD....), however this could be "too much" in 1 shot. Have you tried to give the enzymes in 2 * 1/2 cap instead of 1 cap "straight" ? Also, hasn't your son caught a cold lately ? Maybe some secretions could fill his stomac and make him vomit ??

hi thank you for your reply-
our clinic doc tried him on Zantac but it didn't work, he would spit up more. I will ask my new doc next week to try previcid. Thank you..

hi Olivier-

I was wondering about the enzymes quality. The bottle is 3 months old. I started him today on using 3/4ths cap every feeding and he is not throwing up like he did with a whole capful. He caught his cold a week after we tried the whole cap so I'm sure it's not the cold. But thank you for thinking outside of the box. You have been helpful. I willl have his new doc test his stools.
thanks-

Hello,

My 8 week old has been on 1 capsule of creon 5 for the past three weeks. We started at half a capsule and increased that to three fourths after 3 weeks. He weighs 14 lbs now. He does have a bit of reflux and is on zantek 3 times a day (1ml). Maybe you could try another brand of enzyme. I thought the enzymes were based on stool analysis and the weight of the child (I maybe wrong..)

Good luck!

Thank you for your response. Your baby has a great weight! You are correct about the quantity of enzymes depending on the weight. As for the stool, I have no idea. No one has ever looked at his stool before. Not even when we were in the hospital for a few days. Thanks again!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My son had a similar problem, without the vomiting though. His pulmonologist put him on Ultrase MT along with Zantac. They think that the acid in my son's stomach was eating away at the enzymes before they got to the pancreas where they needed to be to be effective. i would call your doc and maybe he should try a different enzyme. good luck

Our experience :

the grease rate is analyzed on the stools of 3 days.
Then enzymes are prescribed (??) based on the above rate and checked to the weight :
The UI given per day are added, then the whole is divided by the weight, not to exceed 10000.
I explain :
our daughter, today, takes CREON enzymes :
2*37000UI+2*35000UI
she weighs 12Kg
(2*37000 + 2*35000) / 12 = 12000. too much enzymes, so 1 pill of omeprazole is prescribed.
