Favorite Scripture

Well, now that we have this topic, we might as well use it. =-) What is everyone's favorite scripture? Mine is Matthew 6:25-34. "Therefore i tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lillies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. if that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

The first time I really looked at that was right around the time I was being faced with getting cut off from my parent's health insurance. I wasn't all that strong in my faith at that time, though, so I remember I was like, "Yeah, right." =-) But once I had exhausted all my options (the state wouldn't help me, and neither would the many insurance companies I looked up) So there really was no point in me worrying about it, so I didn't and I went back to focusing on college, which is where I was at the time. Lo and behold, Just before I was to be cut off, my insurance company ruled me a disabled (or something, I'm not sure how exactly it works) and now everything is fine. So, as I grew in my faith, I put this into everyday practice, and I am continually amazed. Really, not to long ago, I had a one-day-a-week job that didn't even cover my rent, but each month I would have just exactly enough to pay all the bills, and I always had enough to eat. Now, the money wasn't given to me, of course; it didn't just fall out of the sky... I guess I should say my job was one day a week, plus fill in days for when people called in. I always wass able to work exactly enough days to cover my expenses. Now, there were also some medical bills I did not pay, because they really didn't need to be payed right away, and I didn't have any money for them, anyway. Incidentally, there came a month when my boss took a couple weeks off, so i covered for him. Well, the next bill I got from the hospital was a last notice kind of thing, and once again I had exactly enough money! Ha ha, so that's why I like those verses so much. =-)

My other passion is the Book of Job, particularly the words of Elihu (he was the young one who was angry with Job and his three friends, for those that have read it) and also the words of God right after Elihu. Copying all that out would probably take me all night, so I won't, but anyone who hasn't read it really should; it is some of the most passionate passages in the Bible! It starts on Chapter 32 and goes on until the end for anyone who is interested. Really good stuff. =-)

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. ( Proverbs 3:5-6 )

Oh there are so many...

The one we had read at our wedding was Ruth .."do not press me to leave you or turn back from following you! Were you go, I will go also, where you stay, I will stay; you people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die- and there I shall be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death parts me from you!"

Psalm 102 used to be one of Ry's favorites, it's long or I'd type it out here too, but it's the prayer of the afflicted, I think David wrote it.

Then Miriam's song from Exodus : " THe LORD is my strength and my might and he has become my salvation; this is my GOd, and I will praise him, my father's GOd, and I will exalt thim, The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is his name. "

I've been reading this one from Ruth a lot too..not happy, but fitting : " Call me longer Naomi, call me Mara, fpr the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me, I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty; why call me Naomi when the LORD has dealt harshly with me, and the Almighty has brought calamity on me?"

I love Ruth, there's a lot of passion in it.

I'll find more later, I'm sure lol

Kaits Mom, I really like Proverbs, too; it was the first book of the Bible I really got into. "Let not mercy and truth forsake thee. Bind them about thy neck; write them upon the tablet of thy heart." Poverbs 3:3

As for my website, it's not going to be changing for a while, I'm afraid; at least not until late January, so don't worry about having to check it too much. =-)

Allie, from your posts I can see why you identify with Naomi <img src="i/expressions/brokenheart.gif" border="0"> I had to read the Book of Ruth again and reaquaint myself with it; it really is a great story.

When i got out my old Bible to find my notes on Proverbs, i also found a bunch of notes in Ecclesiastes I had forgotten about.
"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose in heaven;
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war and a time of peace."
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Ecclesiastes is such a somber book; i remember the first time I read the beginning of chapter three, though, i was absolutely awe-struck. At the time I was suffering from depression and I think those verses are most powerful for me when I'm feeling down. Weird, huh?

My favorite verse is Psalms 46:10-"Be still, and know that I am God". I'm a control freak and sometimes God has to let me know whose in control!

My favorite verse is Romans 12:12 - "Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray always." This verse means a lot to me because it helps me to remember that no matter what is going on in my life, I can have hope in the Lord, and therefore, I can always have joy!

One of my favorites that hasn't been mentioned yet;

Psalm 90; 1-4

Those who live in the shelter of the most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare of the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;he is my God, and I am trusting him,
For he will rescue from every trap and protect you from every trap
and protect you from the fatal plague.
He will sheild you with his wings.
He will shelter you with his feathers.
His faithful promisesare your armor and protection.

I actually have a favorite. And I have no idea what book it's in or where it is, but it's the one about love.

I'm pretty sure it's longer than this, but this is the only piece I found, since I have no idea where it came from:
"Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful."

It is from 1st Corinthians, Chapter 13.

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

"Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

"And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of all these is love." 1Cor 13

It is a letter written by the apostle Paul. In the chapter before, Paul talks about how people are given different gifts; one person may be very wise, another very knowledgable, another the gift of faith, another perhaps even the gift of healing or prophesy, etc. He says all such gifts are very important, and not one is more important or can overrule another.

Then, in Chapter thirteen above, he is explaining that any gift needs to be used with love, otherwise it is useless. The part you like, starting with verse four, is explaining why love is so necessary. The end of the chapter is comparing anything without love (When i was a child; the poor reflection; knowing in part) to those same anythings with love (When I became a man, seeing face-to-face, knowing fully).

My fav verse is Psalms 37:4..... Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. My grandma gave me this verse when I was discourged about my infertility. When I read this and studied this verse and really did what it said, I found out that Reece was coming into my life. My pregnancy was great and I always said it was this verse that got me through my heartaches. Leah~proud mommy 2 Reece w/ CF (3) <img src="i/expressions/angel_ani.gif" border="0">

Mine is Matthew 6:25-34. When I start to worry about money, health, and life in general I try to remember/lean on this scripture. It's nice to know that there's a higher power in control & I don't have to worry about tomorrow (although sometimes I do, but I <i>try</i> not too!)

I just realized that I used the same scripture as Mockingbird & I swear I didn't mean to!! I had just read that scripture as part of my <i>Daily Bread</i> devotional & had always liked that passage, but didn't know exactly where it was until a couple of days ago.
Kind of neat that we like the same scripture<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

One of my favorite verses in Isaiah 40:31 "but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." My sister Jennie loved this verse very much especially during her transplant. Now after her death is is a great encouragement to me because she is now able to soar on wings like eagles, she is able to run and walk and not grow weary or faint.

Here is something I have been going back to lately: <div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one spirit into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free --and we were all given the one spirit to drink.
Now the body is not made of one part but many. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, "Because I am not the eye, I do not belong to the body," It would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? As it is, there are many parts but one body.
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 1 Corinthians 12:12-25</end quote></div>

So often I wish I could be doing more, forgetting I am part of a larger body. Quite a while ago, while I was waiting for the bus I was reading my Bible when an older gentleman decided to share his views on the "truth" of Christianity according to The Da Vinci Code. I could have easily refuted him, but for some reason I did not feel led by the spirit and I only listened. Later, I was so sad that I could not say anything, because I felt that I might have been able to save him.

However, looking back on the incident, I realize I am only in my mid-twenties, and he was at least fifty. It is probably likely if I had said anything he would have simply thought of me as young and arrogant and nothing I could have said would make a difference. Perhaps by listening and showing his "proof" did nothing to sway my faith (for I returned to my Bible afterward), perhaps it brought about a change in the man, like rocky soil becoming good soil, so that the next time a seed is sown it will be able to grow... It gives me hope, anyway.

It also occurs to me that parts of the body refers not only to individuals, but different churches as well. From where I live right now, within walking distance there is a Lutheran church, an Episcopalian cathedral, a Jewish temple, a Methodist churh, a Baptist church.... I know there are others I am missing, but you get the idea. I notice the difference between the churches, but it is not a difference between this one serves God and that one doesn't, but that this one serves God this way and that one serves God that way.

Anyway, there is a part of me (a stupid part) that wishes I could do everything by myself, to be the lone hero adn save the world, as it were. But a bigger part of me is encouraged that I am only a part of a much larger body. I guess that is why I like this verse so much. =-)

I am really liking Isaiah 65 lately. <div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>I permited Myself to be sought by those who did not ask for me;
I permitted Myself to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, "Here am I, here am I,"
To a nation which did not call on my name... </end quote></div>

It starts out a bit doom and gloom, but by the end, <div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>It will also come to pass that before they call, i will answer, and while they are still speaking, I will hear.</end quote></div>

I also have been liking Isaiah 49. <div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Listen to me, O islands,
And pay attention, you peoples from afar.
The Lord called Me from the womb;
From the body of My mother He named Me.
He has made my mouth like a sharp sword,
In the shadow of His hand He has concealed Me;
And He has also made Me a select arrow,
He has hidden Me in His quiver.
He said to Me, "You are My Servant, Israel,
In whom I will show My glory." </end quote></div>
