HEARING LOSS

Hi Melissa,
I haven't read others' responses yet, so this might be repetitive. I also have hearing loss and sometimes it's more so then other times. I get it when you hear muffled breathing, I've also had it really bad when voices on the phone sounded like chipmunks (not fun!).

For me, hearing loss has started all of a sudden, not gradual, and there's something like the TV or phone ringing that brings it to my attention. Most of the hearing loss always ends up coming back for me. If I go off of whatever med is the cause, then the hearing comes back soon after. So far, that has been my experience when it comes back if you go off of it. I do have continuous light ringing, tinitus, that I'm more aware of when it's silent. Sometimes the ringing is a little more loud right after TOBI, but it gradually quiets down soon after.

Hope that helps.

This is my first post ever on this or any site so I hope I am doing it right.

I never noticed any problems with my hearing after years of nebulized tobi and tobra(nebulized). However, after my first round on IV tobra ever I noticed within weeks bouncy vision (oscillopsia)

"Oscillopsia can also be used as a quantitative test to document aminoglycoside toxicity."

As I walked down the sidewalk signs and peoples faces would bounce or vibrate so I could not make them out. This is due to nerve cells in the ears that have been damaged which are now unable to properly tell your brain that your head and body are in motion. Therefore your brain does not know you are in motion and does not make the proper adjustments for the visual signals you are receiving.

I also have some degree of vertigo (balance issues) b/c my nerve cells in my ears are not keeping me in balance. Sometimes I lose my balance on stairs and especially in the dark.

This all improved alot after stopping IV Tobra. But it did not correct completely. Also I believe I am more sensitive to this with every subsequent IV Tobra course.

I have not had any actual hearing challenges from IV Tobra thank god.

What you all have described is very concerning.

My only drawbacks are that I stumble more than I should and people think I must be drunk. Also my ability to play sports well is impaired.

I would think that an IV aminoglycoside should be carefully considered if you have ear damage. If your bugs may be sensitive to a non-aminoglycoside then the non-aminoglycoside should be cosidered. Also, maybe step up the nebulized Tobi before jumping into the more systemic IV tobra.

Hi everyone I havent been on in forever. But now suffer from the same as Joe is speaking of. I dont have as much of the osilopsia as I first did. I had to go to a vestibular rehab class. I do know now that this is caused from years of Tobi and one Iv of gentamycin. They are from the same family of drugs. I now have to take collistan. I have alot of problems at night with balance but am fairly normal during the day. I have no hearing loss. So if you can get off these drugs then do so before it causes further damage as Joe and I have spoke about. You really dont want vestibular disease. It seriously affects your life. Driving, walking, doing anything at night. Take care. Becky<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I was sure it was just my sinuses draining when I noticed my own hearing loss.. unfortunately that wasn't the case and he specifically told me that hearing loss/muffled sounds have nothing to do with sinuses. I really wanted to believe it quite badly and wasn't convinced until I had sinus surgery.

If you're on tobra and noticing this I'd let your doc know asap if you're noticing hearing loss/muffled sounds then that's usually an indication that the levels are too high in your body and they need to be adjusted. If you've had ringing in your ears before it can be an indicator that there's definitely something wrong. Like others have said aminoglycosides (tobi, tobra, amikacin, gentamicin) can cause ototoxicity (damage to the nerve in the ear). I remember reading that a combination of taking tobi in addition to another aminoglycoside that can cause hearing loss later in life but it's been a while since I looked it up so I might be wrong.

In my case they think it was either tobi, a combination of, or vancomycin. I didn't notice it really; I think because at the time of the loss we were on vacation and not in a 'stable' normal everyday hearing environment I'd guess you say. When I realized it is when my grandfather started yelling at me to get my attention. It might have been gradual up to a point however we think that the majority of my loss was within a few weeks time period.

Anyway I hope you can find the cause of this and stop it before it progresses.
