How many lines do they put in and when are they taken out?

The 4 big ones that were placed during surgery weren't too bad coming out.

It was the finer one that was inserted in my upper left lobe that was the killer. Not sure why, if it was to do with the size, or placement, I know the tubing itself was a lot more rigid then the other bigger ones, it was like having a lump of wire inserted and removed, and yes apart from post operative pain it was the worst I have experienced...

As mentioned in my previous post every time a drain was removed my lungs would deflate. Was an extremely icky feeling, I would have to hold pressure on the wound as you could feel the air leaking out! EWWWWWWWWWW

I remember in ICU when the first drains were removed, my cf nurse had to stick her finger in the hole to stop the air escaping! And for me it happened with every drain removed, I was just freaky that way, fits my name though <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">)

Pulling the chesttubes did hurt, but it wasn't really bad. I was expecting it to hurt, so was prepared for it. But all in all it wasn't really bad

Pulling the chest tubes was a complete nightmare, BUT I wasn't expecting anything going into it and after a few minutes the pain was gone. they have to remove them so fast and then seal the site quickly too so I think that is why it hurts so damn bad. Seriously though how good it feels to be free of tubes in the aftermath makes the bit of pain worth it though.

I also had a small chest tube inserted a few days after my initial tubes were removed because I had an air pocket I could not diffuse on my own with deep breathing. That one did ot hurt get removed like the other ones did for me. I actually barely felt it to be honest. Removing the suture that held it in place hurt more than the doc actually pulling the little thing out.

Chest tubes are a funny thing for me anyway. At first I didn't so much feel them (inside - I obviously felt them coming out of me). I had a lot of fluid that needed to drain at first. As time passed and the fluid lessened there wasn't the fluidy "cushion" between my lungs and ribs and the tube so I could feel them more. Same thing happened with the little one. I actually felt relieved from pain when they put it in at first then after a day or so it started to hurt pretty bad because I no longer needed it. Once it was removed felt fine.

Take Care and try not to stress to much over the chest tubes. It is not the most comfortable thing but I will say if I needed another transplant that is not what I would stress over lol.
