How many of you have gotten C. difficile?

Yep, I am still in the slammer, officially now over two months. I am beginning to see an end to this particular ordeal though. The docs have identified why I am running my latest fever....I have C. difficile or C-diff for short. I have been on so many IV's for so long that the drugs have wiped out my good bacteria in my intestines and left good ol C. diff to proliferate and cause hell. I am so bloated and crampy that I look pregnant...a nurse actually said I looked like I had quads in there LOL! Unfortunately, my electrolytes are off (I have been getting 60-80 MEQ's of KCL and mag replacements because I have been losing those as fast as I am eating them) and am dehydrated. Last night my heart acted up, became very tachycardic...all related to dehydration and low potassium. Once the docs get all of this stuff straightened up, I should be able to go home. Right now I am on Flagyl to treat the C diff. Keep your fingers crossed...I am soooo wanting to see the sun now, it is 80 degrees in NY today!!!!

Anyhow...just wondering if anyone has gone through this hell too...as a nurse I took care of alot of C-diff patients, now I know what they felt. I wouldn't wish it on an enemy.

I know how you feel. I had my trach for a few days and then got C-diff. It was hard to turn and move and pooping after I pooped and then some. They had to change my bedding sometimes all over again after they just changed it.

what I would take if I had it again besides what you are already taken is Tea Tree oil suppositories. You can get them at whole foods market or buy them online from luckyvitamin.com

I had my husband bring them from home and the ICU doctor wanted to try them up my butt and I did not know if it was safe. So I said no. Well when I came home from the hospital, after several months, I once had a tiny amount of diahrea. I was not sure if it was the beginning of C-diff. I decided to try the tea tree oil up my butt and the next day I was perfect again. I have no clue as to what I had but it did help with the diahrea. I remember that the gurgling sound from my belly went away. I have used it for my vagina and I love them. I try and use them whenever I feel a dry or think I have been eating too many fruits which can contribute to yeast. IT takes care the problem overnight.

If you decide to buy them please keep them in the refrigerator because they will become like mush when you insert them. I hope they help you.

If I had c-diff, I would probably use them at least three times a day. For normal yeast infections, they say to use them twice a day for two weeks. I only need to use one here and there. I keep on top in the bottom dept.

There is a cooling effect when it is inserted. I would not use Tea tree oil directly on your sore area repeatedly. If you buy a lotion make sure you add a heavy creme. Tea tree oil is very drying. When inserted vaginally or rectally that is a different story.

here is where you can buy them at a deep discount. I believe they are twice the price at whole foods. It is worth buying one box at whole foods first to make sure you like this product.

Just wanted to say that I, too, am living the nightmere of c.diff...only it;'s not me who has it, it's my 17 moonth old! She has been on Flagyl 5 times since she was hospitalized with c.diff in January. (vancomyacin once, it had no effect on her). We just can't get rid of it. The theory is that she is on Flagyl long enough to reduce the number of spores so it doesn't show up on a test for c.diff, but not knock them out completly. Right now, we have taken her off her antacid (great, the reflux is back!!!!) to let acid build up and hopefully make her stomack a little less hospital to the c.diff.

We are also doing a 4 day on, 4 day off, 15 day on regimine with the Flagyl currently. I hope something helps!!! As you can attest, she has been miserable!

It's interesting you mention that you are bloated. She was too, the first time around, but we think its from the IV fluid used to get her over dehydration (a result of being sick with c.diff). She looked like the world's smallest pregnant person!

C.diff is by FAR the worst thing we've experienced so far in this journey wiht cf. I wouldn' t wish it on my worsy enemy either, and hope you feel better soon!

I forgot to mention that ask your doctor about taking Acidolphilus. There is a specific strain of good bacteria to treat C-diff. It has been proven to help with Aids patients.

"Saccharomyces boulardii is thought to combat C. difficil by binding with and neutralizing the toxins it produces, halting the diarrhea and dehydration. It does not actually kill the bacteria" from transplantbuddies.org

Check this out

Thank you all so much for your info, Risa, I will most certainly keep those suppositories on my mind especially if I get it again (docs say I will be susceptible to the bug now....they don't call it C diff without reason ) Izemmom, oh your poor daughter! I feel so bad for her, she must be miserable. The doc that takes care of me said kids are really susceptible to C diff. Nasty nasty bug! I am on Flagyl another two weeks, 500mg three times a day. They had me on 250mg but then decided it wasn't enough. My diarrhea has stopped but I feel so pregnant! I think that it is because they are loading me with iron three times a day too for my anemia. Iron wreaks havok on my bowels, so they are going to get things moving again. I will actually be relieved when that does happen! I will be going home on Thursday if I can remain hydrated and keep my electrolytes up. Fingers crossed! Thanks for alll of the well wishes....I have a whole new sympathy for those who have experienced this bug from hell. Hugs, Jenn
