How can you tell if you are pancreatic insufficient? I'm 28 and haven't been til now, but my health has taken an abrupt turn for the worse and I think I have developed some of the signs of pancreatic problems - but I'm not sure.Thank you for your help!

Some of the problems I had were: had to take a dump about 4-5 times a day.Brutal gas (which sometimes can be fun it you use at the right time haha)Fatty crap which you wouldn't be able to tell (has your doctor ever asked if sinks or is it floating)Dave 29 w/cf

I am going to have to be graphic here so please forgive me.I tend to get severe runs about 5 times a day - and it floats, and smells horrible, like sulphur. Some days it'll be about 3 times and may be kind of softly formed, still smells bad. Yes - my gas has gotten a lot worse. I'm CONSTANTLY hungry and have changed from what used to be a really healthy diet to eating high fat foods to see if I could get my weight up - and nothing happens. Now, I don't know if this is because my health has been bad so I'm burning more calories, and if it is because I've been taking Zithromax for the past few months - I went off of it to see if that was causing the problems but I kept having the runs. I am having more joint problems and some fatigue as well. I also get extremely uncomfortable after eating - my stomach gets really bloated to the point I look pregnant, and my stomach feels really hard. I don't notice an "oil slick" in the toilet though.

Sorry for any confusion - but the above note was written by me, the original poster of this topic <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> - I was just listing my symptoms.

sometimes you might see a pile of oil floating on the top of the loo. pretty gross, but it tells if something is way out of balance. id say by your sypmtom there is a high chance that your are pancreatic insufficient.off the topic here, but with the zithromax, has anyone had really abd cramping pains 1 hour after you take it? and if so what did you do to get rid of it, apart from stopping the med.

(Original poster here again - by the way, my name is Piper)I do get stomach cramping from the Zithro - I make sure to take it RIGHT before my head is going to hit the pillow at night and that I have food in my stomach (something substantial that has some fat and protein in it) - so I can sleep through any symptons. Since you can't take antacids within and hour or so after taking it - I find the best thing is to put a heating pad on my stomach. Also - I know this sounds odd - I use a back massager on my abdominal area - it helps. If you don't have a back massager handy - you can try putting your vest on and making sure it sits really low around your waist (sometimes I'll unfasten the part that goes over your arm - so I can wear it kind of like a band around my waist).Good luck!

It depends on the mutation you have. Some folks have very few pancreatic problems, but they can develop and worsen over time. CF causes fibrotic cysts (get it?) in the pancrease, which blocks or stops enzyme production and over time causes insulin problems that lead to CFRD. You may finally have developed cysts. I would sugest starting enzymes. Take tums when you eat to keep stomach acid down (it deactivates enzymes). I take Vioxx once a day for my arthritis and it keeps what used to be awful chronic pain at bay. If I get a flare up I take a tylenol. Tell your doc about your symptoms.Debbie23 w/ CF
