I just started the hyper saline 7% nebulizer solution. I was coughing really hard and figured I just had a lot of mucus coming up but was coughing up straight blood. Has this happened to anyone? Im pretty freaked out because ive never coughed up blood before, just had some blood in my mucus at times. Do I need to be concerned. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have done this as well. My throat just got so irritated. I stopped it entirely. I keep trying to go back on it and the same thing happens each time. I now do the saline that is usually mixed with other drugs. It is lower % of saline and does not irritate me at all. Also, don't worry too much about the blood, as long as it is a small about you are fine. I have coughed up tissues full and the doctors said just to keep an eye on it. Hope this helps.

Kbc- what medication are you on? What is the name of it. I too trying to find an alternative to using the hyper-sal because it is very painful to my daughters throat and nose.

a few thoughts and so sorry if they are "dah, of course we have" type questions. Is she doing a bronchial dilator before the hyper sal like xopenex or albuterol? Is she on the lowest hyper sal of 3%? Have you tried backing off and starting hyper sal very slowly, like 20 seconds the 40 than a minute...slowly building up tolerance? I ink bronchitol sp? Is a possible substitute but not yet fda approved....check out cff pipeline for more on that.

the hyper saline was bothering my daughter & our dr said to use ventolin to help calm down the lungs. Also, maybe try going from 3% & work up to a stronger concentration.
It is always good to consult with the doctor!!

Hi, my daughther also got very irritated and started coughing for two hours in a row, having wheezing as well and she does not have asthma. The doctors could not pin point anything as the symptoms started one week after she did the saline everyday. We stopped It and she was better, i started it again after a while and same things happened. They never suggested to use a lower concentration, will ask them next time. But since then her throat gets irritated very easily and breathes funny sometimes. She never had this before we tried this saline. Ventolin helps her as well as hot water with a little honey.

Most often when I nebulize with albuterol followed by 7% saline, I have varying degrees of bleeding when coughing up whatever is loosened. My lungs are not compromised by CF but I have chronic aspiration and bronchiectasis. When I am coughing, in addition to thick mucus I often hock up chunks of food and stomach acid. If she is aspirating stomach acid, bleeding can be frighteningly voluminous.
The combination of saline and a vascular dilator has been covered as well as cutting the salt concentration. Kids are not sure of the motives for all this air clearance business. She might be overdoing it with the coughing. I can draw bloody foam from nothing more than very forceful coughing. It is not helpful to do this and the daily routine has undoubtedly resulted in strong muscles and the trained ability to really apply some force. It's a thought.

I think anytime blood starts unexpectedly coming out of an orifice (except possibly your nose) you should probably inform your doc immediately. With regard to the hypertonic, I think this is what the docs refer to as "not well-tolerated". Have you tried 3% or 5%? Coughing up blood is often the body's way of saying that it would very much like you to cease the current activity. I would listen.

Coughing up blood is one of the scariest things that can happen to a person with CF. Don't panic. Talk to your doctor. Coughing up blood can be simple irritation of the delicate air passageways. I have used the hypertonic saline and it is very irritating. I learned to open my throat when I did the inhalation therapy. You can practice "opening your throat" while doing your bronchial dilator. Blood, even streaking, can also be an indication of infection so it should not be ignored. As with all things relating to CF, a change in "your normal" needs attention, but remember that your best outcome is achieved by vigilance tempered with calm analysis.

I just researched bronchitol and found that the US Food and Drug Admin. rejected it, but thanks for the idea anyways. She is actually on a Hyper-Sal 7%, so I will ask her doctor if they can switch her to a lower percentage. Maybe that will help out. She does take Xopenex first, then Pulmozyme, and then the Hyper-sal, and she does just fine on the other two.
