So it's that time. I'm officially starting on hypertonic saline for the first time.It seems pretty simple. Does anyone have any advice or experiences to share? Are there any cautions?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure everyone here has been on hypersal at some point.
Word to the wise: if you're just starting it it's going to burn and sting and make you cough so hard you'll pee your pants (ok, maybe not). Buuuuut that stuff is the shiz for loosening you up. Personally I'm very used to it now and it doesn't make me cough a lot, but it gets the job done.

Have some tissues nearby; your nose and eyes may run. But it does taste good..... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

I just got diagnosed with CF and started hypersal. I started with 3% and it cleaned out my lungs well. I use 2 dixie cups per treatment now to spit innow that I started 7% but feel great after the treatment. I did have to start using albuterol before the hypersal too as my doctor put it "to control my cough". Without the albuterol I was coughing till I threw up. Now the plugs are still coming, but my stomach is much more calm. Sorry if TMI, but I did not know that wasn't normal until I told my doctor weeks after starting hypersal at a normal clinic visit and he was surprised I had not called him sooner.

Best wishes

At the beginning it was really hard for me to tolerate, so I quit it. Then a couple years later I tried it again and now I love the stuff! I have noticed that the longer I am on it, the more I tolerate it and I have found that it's my new BFF.

Our 3 year olds been doing for about a year. They told us to start him out slow and to stop if he starts coughing until he gets more use to it. We literally did it 10 seconds at a time, building up stopping with the first coughs. Obviously that's the point, but we didn't want a brochialspasm (sp??)or to put him off it. It took a month to get up full speed and has been no problem since. I had asked what to do if he seemed to be having a problem breathing/too much coughing/possibly brochialspasm (sp??) and they said to do Xopenex right away--even though we just finished it (I was told you need to do the bronchial-dialator first). We've never had to do Xopenex after b/c of issues with it and he never seems to mind it--if anything he likes it (loves salt!!)

My son (16 years old) does this on occasion. The product is designed to make you cough more so it will infact irritate your airway a bit. My son's voice was a little hoarse after using it. But just prepare to cough a little more than usual. Give yourself time and don't try it for the first time and then leave the house.

SicklyhatED, thanks. That doesn't sound too fun but thank for the info. I really appreciate it. I'll be getting my compressor in about a week if not sooner. I sure hope it helps. I'm really not sure what to expect. I've noticed bronchial tightness whenever I do anything physical and I can tell that I'm not getting the oxygen I need.

Thanks Jen. Not TMI at all. You're pretty tough! Hang in there. I don't know what to expect. I do have to use the Portex Acapella in addition to the Peri Vios. I have everything set up for cleaning just as my nephew had years ago. It's tough for me to think about. I'm walking in his shoes now. He almost made it to 16.

I so pray that your son lives a long and full life. He deserves many years ahead. Thanks for your information. Does he get a sore throat sometimes? If so, is it more from the saline or from coughing?

Yeah, I've been a little stubborn about starting on it but the CF doc says it prevents further damage from daily "exacerbation" of tissue due to common and uncommon exposure. So I better get on it and deal with it. I'm kinda nervous but who am I to feel that way. There are so many of us who really struggle.

Thanks, mwinston87. I'm looking forward to the aftermath. My deterioration has been so subtile that it's finally caught up with me. I'm sluggish all the time because my blood is not preperly oxygenated. I'm just wondering how long it will take before I start seeing an improvement.

For what it's worth, it may be pretty individual how irritating it is. My daughter's doctors warned us several times that it can be extremely irritating and cause extreme bronchospasm and that she might have to work up to being able to tolerate it - but then she did the entire treatment fine, no complaints, without even coughing using 7% on the first try, much to our surprise! I actually worry that it doesn't make her cough *enough*, but since you're adult, I'm sure you'll have more junk to bring up, so that shouldn't be a concern for you. Best wishes for you!

Abby is 7 and has been on it since she was 3 and she handles it without a problem. I will say when we first started it, it did make her cough a lot! But that went away and she has done so much better since being on Hyper-sal!! I love the stuff for making my little one healthier!! :) I hope it does the same for you!! And I am so sorry to learn of your nephew :( Best Wishes!!

The first time I tried it, I couldn't tolerate it AT ALL. After a few breaths, I was wondering how the hell people could tolerate that! My lungs were fine, but my throat... NOT! It was burning so bad! It was worse that the worst sore throat I had ever had!
However, I thought that maybe my throat was especially irritated the day I tried it, so I decided to give it another try.

I've been able to take the whole treatment in a single shot! I only had 1 coughing fit during the whole thing. It was definitely not like the others who say that they were coughing their lungs/stomach out so much that they had to stop several times.

The product is NOT designed to make you cough more. It's designed to draw the water from your lung cells to inside the airways, which will liquify your sputum, which will or will not make you cough depending on how much sputum you have to clear.
