Ideas for new cf product development?

Hello everyone,

I'm a researcher in the University of Limerick in Ireland. My brother has cf so I've been around it for most of my life, but only recently realised its severity as his CF has gotten worse. For my final degree project I've decided to research the every day problems people face with CF. I major in product design and technology so ultimately I will be designing a new product to help with either the treatment or lifestyle changes associated with living with cystic fibrosis. I would love if we could use this thread to discuss products or services you WISH were available, or products you CURRENTLY use for your CF that you wish were different in some way.

Thanks a mil... :)

Decreasing the level of noise of the airway clearance devices..The VEST is very loud. We usually try to muffle the noise with a blanket and or my daughter with CF wears headphones while using the computer and doing her VEST. Same goes for her compressor for nebulizers. Everything gets VERY loud and my kids say I am always yelling...Wonder if it is affecting my hearing...

Ditto on the noise issue -- constantly have the tv volume raised or our son is wearing ear buds.

More compact, yet powerful compressors to make them more portable.

And color coded reusable nebulizer cups. With ds being on tobi twice a day, duoneb 3-4 times a day and pulmozyme/dnase once a day, I'm forever marking up the neb cups with "permanent" markers to kept track of them when I sterilize them.

For those of us who dont notice any change with using Pulmozyme or other mucolytics to loosen mucus, it would be neat if there was something like a "super-charged" Mucinex pill or expectorant that is effective and affordable

Whatever vibrates the air passages helps to break up the thick pllegm and improve movement of cilia. It is the cilia that move bacteria out fo teh bronchi and when they are impaired the bacteria remain in place.
Humming helps.
suggest a device that vibrates the inhaled air. Ideally ther rate of vibration would match the rate of the Hydro Pulse Nasal/Sinus irrigator now used to restore nasal/sinus cilia. Because the incoming air would be vibrating at the correct frequency, this would thin the mucus and help to restore good cilia movement in the bronchi. Best o fall it would not require patient effort, they just breathe the air. I would be interested in assisting you on this project so that it can be produced.

That is an idea that I have been considering. Perhaps using ultrasound waves to loosen the mucus? I also really like the other ideas because they address care givers as well. Ideally we can come up with a contemporary solution to a problem all CF sufferers experience as well as those around them.

I would love a nebulizer "basket" for the dishwasher. The plain baskets hold the pieces so they just collect water. It would be nice to have one specifically designed for the size of the nebulizers, where you can put the caps, the inserts, the cups in and they are held firmly/tightly at an angle where they all can get water streams and not pool water.

For those of you who have realized that sound waves could be used effectively to loosen mucus in the airway, there is already such a device on the market. It is called the Vibralung Acoustical Percussor, and it is available from Westmed, Inc. It was FDA-approved in May 2014 and released in September 2014 and has already been shown at the 2014 NACFC in Atlanta, CHEST (American College of Chest Physicians) 2014 in Austin and is scheduled for the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) in Las Vegas in December. You can read more about here:
www.vibralungACT.com.
It is currently being used for intrapulmonary airway clearance although development of a nasal interface is underway for treating sinus disease.

One of my daughter's complaints is that when she is accessed taking a shower is a real pain. I have only found 1 "cover" product and we have not had great success with it staying in place during a shower. So for her a better product to prevent water getting onto the dressing during showering would be a great thing.
