Everything I can find indicates that the CFF recommends yearly testing by age 14. However I'd assume that would be at the least a fasting glucose level, if not a oral glucose tolerance test... but I am not completely sure what they officially recommend to be done. Which test does your clinic use for young children?

Emily has a glucose level done whenever she has labs, but I know that has limited value when it's done if she's not fasting.

they are going to do fasting gluclose.... we're at miller children's in long beach, ca. I suppose if your daughter had any symptoms such as increased thirst or urination you could have her tested sooner. I was just curious what the norm was everywhere else...It's one extra thing to do at yearly labs, but glad that they start so young to catch the cfrd if it develops.

Thanks~ I plan on making sure I ASK for her formal testing yearly by the time she's the recommended age for it, whether or not she's symptomatic (I won't count on her clinic initiating the testing, since they only performed yearly tests on about 60% of people last year- not enough!) But I will definitely keep in mind any worrisome symptoms to ask for testing regardless of age, since I am sure they would do so sooner if symptoms warranted it.

Given how proactive my clinic has been in everything else, to be honest it mystifies me why they are so behind on this one. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"> That is great they start young at yours. It will establish a baseline for each child and help identify at-risk kids earlier... cfrd can start very gradually so starting the testing early has benefits I think.

Oh and Heather~ are you involved at your clinic as part of the parent Advisory Board? I would love to attend meetings at ours but the time is just awful for me to get away for ours and I haven't been able to thus far!!
