Hello, everyone!!
As some of you may know, I was once active in excercise and fitness, untill three years ago when I had seriously injured my collar bone on my way to one of my Aikido lessons. Now, I'm not only starting to feel out of shape, but my body seems to be turning to "putty", where I feel the loss of strength in my hands and arms, and my body weight has been increasing further than I ever want (perhaps TOO healthy for a CF'r) it to. Actually, the CF doc I had in the states had once told me I need to lose a few pounds, when I had more fat than muscle. I believe that overweight is just as unhealthy as underweight, and am experiencing the overweight problem again. I would like to "discover" a way to get back into shape, "with a little help from my friends".
I am already contemplating on going to my city hall, where I'm supposed to have free access to the facilities, because that's what my city income tax is paying for. My idea is to at least try and get back into self practice with my Iaido, till I got the energy to join my fellow club members. I was contemplating on swimming, but after seeing some posts regarding heated pools, and the bacteria, I have second thoughts!
I don't have time to bike ride during the week, besides, I have to at least wait for the weather to improve before using that idea.
Weightlifting alone does not cut it, i tried it and it is no fun without having someone repeat "one more, one more!" when you"ve already done a hundred!!
I found Karaoke can break a bit of a sweat, but that's an expensive lesiure! No dance bars, etc. here, besides, there's the cigarette smoke factor involved! (lucky for those who live near non-smoking bars!)
I'd love to go back to my Aikido, but at this point, seems highly unlikely...my best idea would be "private lessons" in which I'd be paying more to learn the moves, but not taking the breakfalls, etc., in order to preserve my shoulder injury from further and more permanent injury (such as paralysis).
Any constructive advice, comments are welcome, and I will take them into consideration.

Hi,
Have you tried pilates? I think they are good for strengthing muscles without "buffing" you up. I also think you can get a minor cardio workout on them depending on which you do. My mom does Windsor Pilates at home. She loves it! Its also great for a "core" (ab area) workout. I've never done them cause I HATE working my abs (ha!), but its something to consider. You can also just go for power walks when you have time. 15 minutes here or there are a great workout for your lungs.... not necessarily for muscles, though. My husband always says in order to get muscle tone, you MUST lift weights... even if its just light weight lifting. I know that's not what you want to hear, but honestly, I think he's right. I've been lifting a little bit for only the past 2 weeks, and I already have small bumps forming and FEEL stronger. Even if you just lift soup cans and water jugs on a regular basis, its still SOMETHING. Good luck!!!

Thanks Sonia for the reply.
Didn't expect it to take three days before anyone had any ideas. I'm not at all familiar with what a pilate is.
It's good to know the "Power Walks" are actually helpful. I walk to the train station about 10 minutes everyday in a fast pace as to not miss the train!! And, with it being a cold winter, I'm supposing that's even better for the lungs to get used to. (it's also an additional 10 minute walk to work from the train station).
I'm still trying to regulate my food intake, and might try to use the excercise bike the Mother-in-law (MIL) was given, but never used. As for weight lifting, yea, I got a lot of canned chili, which sounds like it can have more use than just for dinner!
I have an Iaido test coming up in August, and I hope to have the strenght and energy to pass the test. My shoulder injury three years ago really set me back quite a bit.
Thanks again, Sonia!

Gosh! I am surprised that no one is replying to this.... maybe you could do a new post in the "adults" section... I know I often don't remember to come to check the posts on "exercise". so, maybe that is the problem. i know when i posted about running and o2 levels, not many responses came in... i just don't think everyone checks this board as often.

Do a google search for "windsor pilates" and you will get a good idea of what they're about and how to get a video for them.... I don't do them myself, so I can't really explain them very well. My mother LOVES them though and loves her results.

If cycling is an interest, the stationary bike world has changed quite a bit recently from the old boring machines: there are "spinning" classes that do group workouts in the gym focused usually on the cardio aspect of riding; there are also recumbent stationary bikes that might be good if the shoulder injury makes leaning on handlebars a problem. I used to do a form of Yoga called "Iyengar" yoga and it depending on the teacher it can be quite a workout - not just the old "flow and glow" meditative yoga. There are a couple books on it that are widely available at the big chain bookstores.
