Infant spitting up formula

Emma (8 weeks old) has had some issues with spitting up ... like all babies do. But in the last week or two she has been spitting up much less. Except today! Today she has spit up 3 times! 2 of those times she was laying down in her bassinet and actually had formula come out her NOSE as well as her mouth. After which she had a small amount of blood come out of her nose.

Should I be worried? Do you think the formula irritated her nose and caused it to bleed a little? Or could it be something else?

Hi Marla,
My son almost always has formula come out of his nose when he vomits, but I do not recall his nose ever bleeding. With that being said, if it was just a little blood I wouldn't worry to much about it, just keep an eye on it and if it happens again call your doctor.
Most likely it was just a little bit of irritation that made it bleed.
Do you live somewhere real cold? It could also be contributed to the dry air indoors.
I hope your daughters spitting up gets better.

Hi,

Ditto to what Carey said about the blood, if it was just a little, it is probably ok.

Is she on zantac? If not, if she is spitting up when lying down, she may need some zantac. I would check with her pulmonologist, CF specialist. I remember when Nathan started going through that at about 9 weeks old and they put him on zantac and it really helped. I would watch her and if she continues to spit up when lying down, she is probably having some reflux, which is common for CF babies and easily treated. You could also try putting her in a swing so that she is not lying flat after eating for an hour or so and see if that helps as well.

DS was a spitter and was put on zantac for reflux and to help the enzymes work a little better. He still spit up. He also has sinus issues early on. Keep an eye on it. It has been drier with the subzero temps, so could've just been irritation in the nasal passages.

Oh and we also raised the head of his crib mattress a little bit, too so he wasn't flat on his back.
