Insulin while pregnant....

I am 15 weeks pregnant and have CFRD.... pre-pregnancy I was on a pill (metformin) but now I am on insulin (Humalog) .. I was just wondering where any of you inject yourselves? I hateee injecting my stomach now, I know it won't do harm to the baby but it feels so weird - I have tried my thighs and they bruise so easily. It's to the point now that I kind of dread eating because I hate injecting myself. Any pointers or tips on places that don't hurt??

Hi Tina,

I was on humolog during my pregnancy. I was given strict instruction to inject the insulin at or below and to the sides of my belly button during pregnancy. The problem I had was finding enough skin to pinch. I had no fat on my stomach whatsoever, so I had to pull enough skin for the smallest needle available at the time, (31 G 1/2") on my humolog pen. Even my OB said there was no layer of fat when he did my c-section, the hazards of having CF I guess! LOL!

I bruise easy as well. Just know, you're not injecting the uterus, the baby is not getting a big shot of insulin, and if you don't use it, your baby is worse off for it. Keep those sugars in check while pregnant. Now is more important than ever. Remember, pregnancy doesn't last forever so I'd just suck up the bruising and do whatever your doc recommends, as far as injection site. I was sent to a special gestational diabetic program even though it was CFRD brought on by the stress of pregnancy. They had me testing my blood sugars four times a day and I had to call in twice a week with all those values and how much insulin I used before each meal. It was a tightly watched program, but it worked. I am now not on insulin anymore (yet) and remain borderline CFRD. Good luck.

Hey Tara,

I have the same problem.... I dont have much skin to pinch on my stomach, especially now that it is stretching! So i grab a good chunk to the sides of my belly button but i feel so weird squeezing/grabbing my belly like that - must just be a mental thing cause I know it shouldn't be doing anything to the baby! Someone told me to try the backs of my upper arms, so i did, and now I feel like I have given myself flu shots; my arm is so sore. So, I'm going to continue the belly. Especially if I am out, I cant really pull my pants down in public and inject my upper thigh lol!

I too, am on very close watch with my sugars.... I have these charts that I fill out and fax over to my diabetes doctor... they have me filling out before & after each meal, and then my reading at bedtime and right when I wake up. It is a lot of work but you're right, it will all be over once the baby is here. My readings have been under control for the last 2 months, when I first started the insulin they were either going WAY too low or still too high, but now that I have the hang of it they are great (knocks on wood).

I hope I can inject my belly when I'm almost ready to pop.... like you said, even if I have JUST the tiniest amount of skin to pinch, thats all i really need I guess!

Tina,

If I can find skin to pinch at 38 weeks pregnant with twins, I'm sure you can with a singleton. LOL! I'm telling you, there was NOTHING there to pinch, but skin is skin. I would lean to the left, if I was pinching the left side, and lean to the right if I was pinching the right side. It may have been mental, but seemed to help. Another tip is, if you're wearing a dress, which for some reason I found myself doing a lot during the summer, pregnant with the twins and going to weddings, I would just locate the spot I needed before I got dressed, then at the reception I just injected straight through the material. The dresses were typically cotton or polyester, not like a thick cardigan or anything! T-shirts work good too, if you don't want to expose yourself in public. But like you, I bruised so much, I actually had to pick the spots in advance and memorize them. LOL! Hope this helps! Enjoy!

Oh, and I bookmarked your blog too. Keep blogging! It's addictive.
