Is having CF a good enough reason to get a Medical Marijuana Card?

So because I have CF, is that a good enough reason for a doctor to get me a MM Card?

Ive done a lot of study about this subject. And I believe an MM Card will benefit me greatly because I have CF. It will help me eat more, as well as help with other issues. I am at a good weight. But I can't eat nearly enough calories the CF doctors say I should be eating. They say I should be eating 4,000 calories a day if I'm working out, and 3,000 calories a day if I'm sedentary. I can't at all eat nearly that much! Like today I ate a ton of food, and I found out that I only ate 2400 calories today. Right now, I'm so full and earlier today I almost threw up from all that I ate and drank.

I also think that MM would benefit me with other issues I suffer from which include anxiety and depression and insomnia. Currently, I have a whole arsenal of meds to help with that. Paxil, Prozac, Xanax and Klonopin. Although I stopped taking Paxil a month and a half ago.

So I think that MM will benefit me in so many ways. But I want to be specific about CF. Is having CF a good enough reason for the doctor to subscribe me to the MM Program? I also found a way to inhale it without it effecting my lungs negatively, it's called a vaporizer. And I could also eat it.

Medical Marijuana, is just that medicine. I is known to be a great help for people with CF, if my son starts having any issues, I would rather him take, eat , ect (not smoke) marijuana, then any of the meds you mentioned.. ( Paxil, Prozac, Xanax and Klonopin) Marijuana, could probably replace most of the medication you are on, but just like any other medicine, it can be abused.... I say do what makes you feel better, as long as you are not harming yourself or anyone else!
Just my thought....

I've often thought of applying for a MM card myself. I think it would help with my appetite, I have none, along with the other issues you raised; depression, etc.
Really, as long as you're not smoking it, I don't see why not.
If I do start seriously thinking about getting a MM card, I will absolutely discuss it with my entire medical team; CF pulmonologist/specialist, transplant doctor, etc.
They will be able to tell me if it's really such a good idea or not. They can also counsel me on counter indications with all my meds. Believe me, post-trans there are a TON of drugs!
I hope this helps you. My advice is usually worth exactly what you paid for it.
Be well, Pat.

Enzo,

The short answer is yes, without question, CF is bad enough to qualify for MM.

CF is a condition so severe, you have a virtual guarantee that no MM card would be denied, or even questioned. Barbers with sciatica or such is a common medical reason MM cards are issued. I'm not knocking occupational nerve pain but you are a shoe in. CF is major league.

I haven’t said anything before, but if MM can just help you cope without so many neuroleptic and anti-anxiety drugs, it is worth the trade off right there. The keys are caution, moderation and monitoring because you are self medicating here. Don’t discontinue any medications without directions from your doctor on how to taper off a drug like Xanax.

Which comes to seeing a doctor for your MM or Red card, you don’t see your regular doctor in most cases. Certifying patients for MM use is like a medical specialty, all they do is see patients and IF they qualify, that doctor’s office does everything except lick the stamp to send off for your Red card. It isn’t a genuine specialty, you don’t need to get a referral or anything from your regular doctors except records.

I can tell you how it is done in Colorado, which I understand is pretty standard in other MM States. Walk into a dispensary and pick up a few cards for doctors that certify you for your Medical Marijuana Registry card. Choose one and make an appointment. The cards have addresses, fees and such so you can select a doctor with ease. They will have a website and a phone number as well.

The MM doctor’s appointment will probably be done via internet, by accessing the website on the doctor’s office you’ve chosen. On the website everything is spelled out. They list everything you need to bring to the appointment which includes cash, photo identification and some medical records if you can.

You should bring a couple items; 1. A copy of your genetic or sweat chloride test( this is about as solid proof you have CF that you can offer). 2. If you have any summary from a clinic visit that generally goes “Enzo ___ a pleasant 19 year old man with cystic fibrosis. Mr.___ was diagnosed at six months ……” Any summary where it says your name, you have CF, possibly your mutations and is signed, (name of your doctor typed on the report). Bring a copy of your medications or be prepared to write them all down.

Once you have booked an appointment, make absolutely certain nothing has been missed, your license hasn’t expired, you actually have your money and records because it is a hassle if you don’t. Once there you will be coached through the forms, answering any questions that seem unclear and basically assuring all the “I’s” dotted and “T’s” crossed.
You will be seen by the doctor, he/she will ask a few questions like what condition you have. Sort of leading questions so you are processed efficiently. They know what satisfies the State for MM use and CF is a lock.
After this, you will have everything you need except a check or money order to the State as a fee for your MM Registry card.

Good Luck

my dad is gonna actually do this behind my moms back to help me. As she's against all drugs completely. So I can't really have documents stating my chloride tests or whatever. But I do have a paper from my cf doctor saying I suffer from cf, it was originally addressed to the school but I never gave it to them. Would that work? I also have all the cf meds as other proof

Enzo,

The letter you describe will be fine. In the future, all you need to do is call your doctor's office and request a copy of whatever records you want or need. People do it all the time for a hundred legitimate reasons so no flags are going up with a records request. Some offices charge a small fee for record copies so when you call, ask when you can pick up the copies and is there a fee?

The MM doctor appointments range around $60 which includes all the help with the forms sent to your State MM Registry. Amongst the packet contents you'll include a check or (I prefer Postal) Money Order for the State fee which varies in Colorado due to income. It could be $60 or $15, since this is new for many, cost is important to know. In otherwords, you pay for the MM doctor appointment say, $60 plus you send a check or money order for say, $45 or a total of $105 plus 2 oz. of postage.

I can't resist this. A MM card is not a licence to share pot with other people, sspecially it isn't a license to give or share with Minors. You just went through some very challenging years between 13 and 16 or 17 years of age. This is when we learn coping mechanisms and interrelationships involving conflict management with adults and adult issues. Getting hammered or getting stoned instead of coping with issues during these years can leave a neurological and psychological deficit. This can lead to using drugs to cope later in life as an adult.

My sense is you have spent a lot of time considering this decision and you are being sensitive to the concerns of your parents. It is difficult to transition from adolescent to adult, especially when parents and children are so involved due to CF. Convincing your mother MM is something you feel is helpful isn't going to happen and though I wouldn't call it sneaking, being considerate is not involving your mother in this medical decision just as you have taken control of your medications and such. It also takes some time to convince yourself you are an adult. Going straight for a vaproizor is the adult decision, getting it legally is even better.

Be Happy,

LL

if I'm interested in something I dive head first into it. Like when I got prescribed the xanax I learned everything there was to learn about it. My mom and dad are divorced. So it'd be pretty easy to do it without her knowing. But I hate not telling her our plans, but I've told her in the past how MM would benefit me and she goes on a rant saying how I'm gonna become a druggie and a stoner. I get into trouble for even bringing up the words MM. This is something I can only tell my closest friends. I can't even tell my own grandmother. I hate being this secretive about it, cause I'm not that type of person. I was pretty open about the Xanax (but not the Prozac).

It probably is a familiar situation shared with many 18 to 26 year olds. Divorce is a tricky and occasionally impossible issue for kids to navigate. Being born with CF and diagnosed so young, the stresses on a family due to fear, guilt and other concerns can make relationships and family behavior pretty screwy.

In the awkward position of being a dependent adult, you have found a workable solution. Keep studying your medications, tests and such. Keep asking questions!

I'm a male, 24yo, I live in Michigan. I told my cf doctor that I would like a referral for a MM card and they wrote it for me no problem. I brought the referral to the state MM screener/doctor, and bingo, got accepted no problem. The appointment took 10 mins. They saw I had cf and asked me why I think the Marijuana would be beneficial for me and my condition and I told them appetite. That's all it took. If your looking to go this route good luck and I hope its as easy for you as it was for me.

I wanted to add-
I was slightly nervous to ask my cf doctor for a referral. Marijuana is still kind of taboo. But when I asked my doctor he said sure no problem- if it helps you that's fine. He instructed that I strictly ingest it only of course. The point is we are sick, and we have an absolute legitimate reason. To be fair, I can see your moms concerns. But if marijuana helps you theres no reason to have to hide it for feel bad.
