Just wondering if anyone drinks alcohol while on their course of IV's? It's my best friends 21st bday this wknd and typical me ended up on IV's for her party she understands my situation and if I can't drink I can't. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with alcohol and IV's? My nurses told me before I should be fine so I went ahead and had 1 drink and was sick as a dog the next day. But I was on different meds then, right now I'm on ciproxin & meropenum. Anyway just looking for another CFers view on it who'll b able to advise better than the nurses! Thank u, hope we're all doing well

I have had 1 drink on antibiotics before. I have never been sick from it but I don't usually do it at all. Unless its a special occasion.
I was told it won't harm you--it just reduces the effectiveness of the antibiotics.

I was told that I could have a drink or two but to have a glass of water in between. I have never had a problem. I am currently on IV collision and zoysn and plan on having a glass of wine tomorrow. But I wouldn't have more than two at the most, but that is just me

One time after an exceptionally rough course of IVs I got an evening out of jail free card and went to dinner near the hospital with hubby-my nurse said a glass of wine wouldn't hurt anything. And it was nice!
I refrain from it in general, but once in a great while, it does help me get to sleep.

I have done it many times because I've never been told not to and it hasn't said anything about it on the prescription labeling (except when I was on flagyl).

Merepenum and cipro both can take a shot at your liver, I've never drank while on ivs but have a had a few the day after I get out or the weekend after while the drugs are still in my system to some extent and have found that I don't tolerate it as well and its effects last longer.

Im sure it will not hurt you but it might lower your immune system. Everytime I am feeling like I slightly might get sick and then I drink, I end up sick.

I've been on IVs for over a year. I occasionally have one drink, at most two. In general my alcohol tolerance is low, but I've never had any problems. I didn't ask my doctor because I didn't want to be told I couldn't have a drink. :) I am on different med's than you are.
