aj's been really fussy between the hours of 11:30-2am. i've noticed it the past few nights in a row. austin finally saw the wrath of aj fussing last night cause he stayed up and i think a light blub went off in his head lol. nothing seems to calm him down, not a bottle, not swaddling (he sqirms his way out...he doesn't like to be swaddled he's a free bird), shhhhing him hasn't worked. we just feel like pulling our hair out cause nothing soothes him. so i looked up on line colic, could it be colic? the formula he's on is "supposed" to reduce colic, so i'm baffled. any suggestions? we finally did get him to sleep before midnight last night. austin handed him over to me and i put him on my chest and not 30 min later he fell asleep, but the night before i had tried that and it didn't work. any help is appreciated! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sounds like normal newborn behavior I'm afraid. I do have a question though - how loud are you shhhhing him? You have to do it really loud - louder than they're crying and right by their ear. Do you have "the happiest baby on the block" book? He gives a lot of great tips in there. Personally I found patting his back while swaying and shhhing to be pretty effective. But nursing him was almost always effective and I know you don't have that in your toolbox.

Good luck!!

yea we are shhing him right in his ear and swaying with him or walking. i also add in the patting his back or butt, cause it seems to work sometimes, but the last couple nights errr wrong answer lol. hopefully it will get better in the coming weeks, but he is a newborn too so i can't blame him. he'll be a month old tomorrow! it's so hard to believe!!

Candice ((((((hugs!)))))))) I think the best advice is what Caroline offered, the 5 S's from Dr Karp. They worked wonders in our house.

Swaddling
Shushing sounds (including mechanical white noise)
Side/Stomach position (while holding him)
Swinging (Swaying) while holding him or in a swing/car ride etc
Sucking (bottle, paci or finger)

Get the book, or DVD, I think you'll like it. The only other thing I can think of is the formula. Perhaps a call to the pedi today to see what else is out there. I know there are some formulas you can get with a prescription and I know AJ has reflux so maybe he is eligible for them.
