Just out of curiosity, how many are anemic?

My labs for the last few times have come back as anemic, this time worse than the others which explains why I am tired as hell not to mention brewing another infection. All I want to do is sleep, my doc was away today, so the exact numbers weren't given to me, but the nurse says, yeah they were worse than the last batch of labs. (She probably will make sure I am not losing blood from other sources I talk to her tomorrow regarding all of the labs including my sputum. Depending on how I feel and what is growing, my CF doc will devise a plan....hopefully no admission! (Although I have been warned that IV's are a strong possibility)

Okay, so I am off topic...I take vitamins with extra iron...I guess it isn't enough. I presume this is from malabsorbsion issues? Currently I am not on any intensive antibiotics except for my Zithromax M-W-F. My kidneys seem to work well (I know with poor kidney function, anemia is common as well) and I do eat red meat...obviously not enough of that either. I am pancreatic insufficient.....I do know of other CF folks who are severely anemic even though their pancreas' function well. I just wonder how many of you are also anemic and what your doc prescribes besides the obvious, more iron. Just wanted to bounce that off of you guys and gals. I have been anemic in the past, needing 3 courses of iron infustions, but mine were due to a cyst on my uterus. I guess I didn't emphasize enough how bad my periods were. I finally went to gyno and she saw my blood clots first hand and scheduled immediate surgery.

That's just my experience - my team overlooked something kinda obvious. What is your cycle like? Have you been to the gyno? Do you have any bleeding cysts? Even if they are strictly internal, it can cause problems.... just my thoughts.

Oh, and iron suppliments didn't help worth squat.

I hope they find the source of your trouble, and fix it - I remember that dragged out feeling well.

best wishes

Before my boys were diagnosed with cf, they had severe anemia, low protein and low albumin (sp?). Brandy ended up having 2 blood transfusions and Mikey had one. They were diagnosed with cf a couple of months later but have had no problems with anemia since.

I don't have cysts that I know of, my cycles are pretty irregular but not too heavy. The one thing that brings up red flags is the fact that I am on Coumadin for a past history of blood clots in my lungs. Now I know poeple who have bled internally because of that med, my doc said my bleeding times were okay INR of 2.8 (I think that is a tad high though), they like to keep my INR's between 2 and 2.5 to prevent any more blood clots to my lungs (at this point , my health is much more fragile than it was when I had the clot so I would have serious problems if it happens again). I am still waiting for her to call me back to see what our plan is, especially regarding the anemia as well as my cultures. Like I have said previously, I have seen alot of people who have CF and are anemic as well, seems like there is a connection perhaps (as Mel stated with her boys). Any more suggestions are certainly welcome....I am just trying to think about what to ask my doc. Hugs to all, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have been anemic off and on but nothing serious and wouldnt comment except to say I know from experience you can bleed internally ALOT without them knowing it so I woudl insist on a scan.

After a 'minor' surgery - gallbladder removed I was not recovering well and nurses told me I had to get up and around or I was never going to feel better or be released yada yada so I finally figured I MUST be being a huge baby even though I felt like I would die so I got up and using IV pole as a walker did a small hallway trip. Luckily doc saw me and ordered stat labs (really was yelling and running around like do on ER <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> ) I think he realized I was about to fall over. Anyway long story short I had bled internally to point I was almost in shock due to blood loss before it was caught.

If you have a slow bleed it can be sucking life out of you but body will also resorb it and so it may not get noticed. This also happened to my grandfather who was on coumadin.

Good luck

I have been anemic since I was 12-years-old. It was first diagnosed only 2 months after I started menstrating. I also have a history of a left ovarian cyst that comes and goes. I have been on Slow FE 1 x daily for the past 13 years now. Thank gosh I haven't needed to increase. I do get much more tired, though, during that time of the month. Otherwise, I'm fine.
