Hello Everyone <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I am 24 and I have CF on top of type 1 diabetes (not related to my cf at all) I had to go to the ER almost a week ago b/c my feet and legs are extremely swollen and will not go down. This has been going on in my legs for 2 days and my feet have been getting swollen on and off for 3 weeks now. The ER doctor ruled out kidney failure due to my blood results showing my kidneys were in great shape. My blood sugar levels are good, I take great care of myself and work closely with my endocrinologist (aka diabetic doctor) The ER doctor said that my feet and legs are getting so swollen b/c I am leaking a ton of protein. I also have poor vitamin D levels. She said these issues are probably b/c of my cf and I need to bring it up with my cf doctor. I have an appointment this month so I will definitely bring this to his attention but I was wondering if any other cfers have this problem and if so, what do you do to help with the protein leakage and low vitamin D levels? What are some things you can do or take? What works for you? Thanks so much for taking time to read this and help me out! I really appreciate the feedback

Hi Amber,

Sorry to here about your swollen legs. I'm not sure about the protein issue, so I can't help you on that one.

Are you on some sort vitamin D supplement like Colecalciferol? It assists on helping with vitamin D levels.

Hi Amber, I'm not sure about this leaking protein, as I can't find anything on it, and would be for more ppl with kidney problems/ disease, and older badly controlled diabetics, but maybe it just your feet in general wore very, very sore? Were you wearing bad shoes? If that's the case you need to elevated them, and keep them that way for a couple days.... Also, your vitamin D levels concern me, you need to make sure your getting enough vitamins, *esp D* being a young woman for your bones. Studies have shown these can improve you lung function as well. Do you take ADEK'S?? Are you going to a CF center that checks your levels regularly? Because I feel they should have found this beforehand. I take CitralCAL chewables and Petites for manage of Vitamin D..... Feel better!

Hi:
I just had PARA thyroid surgery.  Among other things the parathroid ( 4 of them, each about the size of a piece of rice) which is behind the throid, controls Calcium and Vit D.  Checking for it starts with a simple b;ood test and if necessary a scan.
