My daugher is travelling from Australia via Dubai to the US (24 hr's). She has a small cooler bag for pulmozyme with a few ice blocks but is concerned as to how she can re ice the blocks so it always stays refrigerated. How long can pulmo last not being refrgierated?

What do you guy's do? Are the flight attendants happy to help out and freeze blocks or refrigerate med's?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi there
I have flown from aus a few times now and it is my understanding that there is protocol preventing flight attendants refridgerating meds as they do not have the facilities. On a couple of occaisions i have been lucky and they have taken them. Unfortunately they also do not have facilities to freeze things. If you inform the airline they are usually happy to provide a little extra ice in plastic bags throughout the trip. The best option i have found by far is however special freezer bricks which freeze at a higher temp meaning they take longer to freeze but also far longer to defrost. These types of bricks will in a good freezer bad easily last 24 hours and i have actually known them to last as long as 48 but i wouldnt like to push it. Also if you ask for ice on the plane it helps keeps the bricks cooler and means they stay frozen longer. I have obtained these bricks from my hospital pharmacy in australia. if i can be of further help feel free to pm me. otherwise i hope your daughter has happy and safe travels!

When I traveled to Murano (an Island north of Venice) it took about 24 hours. Flight to NY, layover, International flight to Europe. layover, then another flight to Venice. Then a few boats to get to Murano. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> (Great place to visit BTW!)

Anyways, I had my stuff inbetween the ice packs that CFF Pharmacy sends things to me in. It was a meds sandwich... Meds in the middle. Ice packs on either side. THat was inside an insulated freezer bag. I rubber-banded it up snug. I put that inside a ziploc baggie with the cutout of the prescriptions inside and visible. Along with labels - MEDICINE, must be kept COLD. THe thing was put in a carry on bag. THe ice pouches were still partly frozen when I got there.

Make arrangements for a mini fridge or bar so that you'll have something to keep it cool once you get there!
