Loss of taste

I have been on IV antibiotics for 3 weeks now- Tobramycin and Meropenem + oral Keflex.

I am feeling great- lung wise. BUT I am having some weird side effects.

I have a horrible metallic taste/loss of taste in my mouth. Everything sweet tastes salty and I can hardly taste anything....even hot sauce! This is NOT good for gaining weight. Everything tastes bad. I also have very swollen lymph nodes behind my neck and ears.

I am going to the doctor tomorrow...but wanted to see if either of these have ever happend to you. I am so frusterated!

Yes, IV meds have a tendency to affect things like that, but the oral would be the first thing I'd look at as a cause. I just can't remember which IV causes metallic taste, but I don't think it's Tobra because I'm on that one every time and we alternate second drugs and I don't get bad taste every time.

Do you have thrush blocking your taste buds? If so, then diflucan (sp?) or nystatin rinse will take care of that in short order.

I have been told by some friends that have taken Mero before that it messes up their tastes and also makes them semi sick at times. I have never had a problem when I have taken Tobra or Keflex but that is me, and I have never had Mero.

Hope you get it all worked out and start feeling better soon.

Now I remember: It's Doribax (doripenum) that makes that taste for me - same family: http://www.rxlist.com/doribax-drug.htm

Loss of taste update

Ok, so now it has been a week since we have pulled the plug on IVs....and still no taste buds. I am beyond frusterated. Even drinking a Dr. Pepper tastes absolutely horrible. Nothing has taste...not even hot peppers.

I have tried scraping my tongue...gently. Mouthwashing with salt water and baking soda.

Uggggh!

I've had the same problem, but it has developed over the last 2 years. Also, my sense of smell has totally disappeared, and I wonder if that's what's happened to you too--most taste is actually augmented by smell (I think over 80%). I've got a good ENT, but we can't trace the loss to any particular drug/event. I haven't been on many IV antibiotics, and merepenem didn't seem to have any good or bad effect. Sorry, probably doesn't help, but maybe you should check with an ENT with some experience with CF. No harm in trying. (It's not just CF people with this issue, some estimates are as high as 5% of the population has a significant smell/taste loss with no apparent obvious source.)
