Medicare not paying for Respiratory stuff..

What does anyone do with Medicare? It doesn't pay for ANYTHING lung related!! I need a new nebulizer, they don't cover. My drs. are considering Oxygen at night (because I drop into the 80's) but it is literally 1 number above what Medicare considers paying for..How do people survive financially when their insurance doesn't cover anything. Stressed! <img title="Frown" src="include/wysiwyg/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/smiley-frown.gif" alt="Frown" border="0" />

Medicare paid for my nebulizers and a replacement compressor.

The financial people at your CF Center can help you.

They should pay for all of the stuff you mentioned....I am on Medicare as my primary insurance. They paid for every piece of equipment that I have needed so far without a hitch.. The O2, they will cover if you drop below 89 (or is it 88?)....If you are dropping into the 80's, then they should cover it. Maybe your doc needs to tweak the paperwork a bit in your favor, not lie, but document that your sats do indeed drop into the 80's and you meet the criteria. As far as the neb, I believe Medicare will pay for a new one every 5 years. Your doc needs to be specific as to why you need one etc.....As much as it is a pain, sometimes it takes that extra bit of documentation. Good luck!

Thank you Bill. When I called the Medical Supply company here I was told Medicare only rented them (the nebulizer) and I couldn't ever *own* it and they don't accept medicare. I will try to find more help with this.

The cutoff for Medicare covering your O2 is indeed 88, so you're right, they wouldn't cover that in your case. And a lot of companies do just "rent" out their durable medical equipment. I don't own my feeding pump.

If your O2 sat at yodur doc's was 89, then it probably dips lower than that at night. What I suggest is to get a night oximetry study done to monitor your 02 sats during the night. I would bet my pinky that you would qualify for at least night time O2.. Was that reading at rest or with exercise? If that was at rest, then they should do one while you are walking the halls as well. When my O2 sats were in question, that is exactly what my pulmo did. He clipped on an oximeter and I basically walked the halls, as soon as it hit 88, he told me to stop.

I really hope you get the O2 concentrator/nebulizer, sounds like you could def use them!

I didn't realize that they mainly *rent* machines, interesting. I wasn't schooled in Medicare,so I am learning alot. Thank you.

thanks Jen I will mention the study to my dr. I bet it drops too at nigth and that explains why I am not sleeping and wake up with constant headaches. The reading was at rest-I had just walked into the drs. office.

Hi Annie,
I would check with diffeent medical supply/homecare companies. A basic Nebulizer costs around 100 bucks. You may be able to buy one thru a homecare co. I would also suggest having you doc do an overnight pulse ox, to see if you can qualify for overnight 02.
