mold in the crawl space -- OT

i apologize for posting something here that is off topic, but i thought some of you adult cfers might know a thing or two about mold's effects on health.

my mom made an offer on a condo today and there was an inspection done on it ~6 weeks ago that said there was "a mold like substance" below the house (in the crawl space). from the inspection, we're not certain how much or what kind of mold may be there. as part of the offer, we are going to ask that they have it removed/cleaned, but i know some kinds of mold you can't ever really remove. our next step is probably going to be to have the mold tested.

so my questions are, assuming there is some kind of mold down there, and that it isn't the infamous black mold, do you think that it being under the condo could have a serious effect on the condo itself? could it get inside? if we had it cleaned, would it most likely be a reoccurring problem or would that depend on the type of mold?

my mom has pretty bad asthma and allergies (not sure if to mold specifically) and i wouldn't want her getting into a situation that could be bad for her health. but we also have been looking for a place for her for about 2 years now and this is the first one that has everything she wants, so we don't want to make a big deal out of this if it is something we can keep under control. the realtor told us that most houses will have a little bit of some kind of mold underneath them.

thanks in advance for any input.

Take care of it NOW

Make a stipulation that it not only be cleaed, but tested by a person certified in dealing with mold. Depending on location & severity it could lead to rotting etc.

Mold means moisture. So all health & safety concerns should be taken seriously. If it turns out to not to be a problem ~ great

You dont want to find out he hard way because if you know of the problem & try to sell it & the next potential buyer makes a fuss that you are in deep doo doo.

Finding out the "source" is your big concern. That will decide if this will be a continuous problem even if it is cleaned up & removed.

Good Luck

I agree with finding the source as being really, really important. We had an issue with a wet basement that we discovered after we moved- turned out that it was the downspouts from the gutters that was the problem. Now it is dry, and one day we will take everything out and clorox it to get rid of the smell... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> . My MIL also had a drainage problem when we had record rains a few years ago, and had to have her duct work to her heat/cooling system replaced too, due to mold. I'd make sure they check that too, if it runs under the house, so you don't get stuck with that bill unexpectedly. That's about all I can help-sorry!

I hope it turns out to be an easily fixed non issue- good luck!

Honestly, I wouldn't even buy a place with mold. It is almost impossible to get rid of permanently. It got there somehow so not only do you have to deal with the mold itself, you have to figure out where the moisture came from and deal with that too. Its incredibly expensive and there are no guarentees it will work.

Also, if its bad enough it could already be under the flooring of the house, so if you still want to go forward, have that checked to.
