MRSA!!

Not this past weekend but the weekend before, my family (my son, his father and I) went on a trip for a wedding and to visit my family in Orlando. Within a couple of days getting back, we all came down with a cold (cough, runny nose, etc) so I was concerned about the baby cuz hes got CF. The cf clinic gave us an RX for antibiotics and then we had an appointment, they checked him, swabbed his throat and gave us some steroids also for him.

On Tuesday of last week, I also started developing a bug bite-like bump on my upper thigh (close to my groin) and it kept getting bigger and hurt more and more. So we went to the ER that Saturday(this past weekend) and the nurse looked at it and squeezed it and cuz she couldnt get anything out of it, she gave me an antibiotic and told me it was an infected ingrown hair. When I walked in i told her i was afraid it could be MRSA. She said in a sarcastic tone "everything is MRSA" , like she meant that everyone that comes in with something like this say its MRSA. Well, she wanted me to follow up on Monday with either my PCP or go back to the ER. Well, Monday morning when we had to go to clinic, I decided to go back to the ER after clinic because it opened and started pussing. (gross i know)- turns out i got admitted and put on hard core IV antibiotics, which I am currently STILL on at home!

Anyway, we got the call on the culture today from the clinic and apparently Toby was + for MRSA as well. I also noticed that when I went in and got put on antibiotics, my cold seemed to go away. My bf still has his cold though, so when we found out Toby was + for MRSA, now my bf left to get cultured at the clinic, since he cant go back to work without doctor clearance anyway, but with Toby being + he now thinks he could have it as well.

So, long story, sorry- but I was wondering if anyone else had to deal with MRSA and what you did while you had it, what happened with your Little one and how long it took to clear up? Im partially afraid the antibiotic they prescribed toby (bactraban) may not do the job and he'll wind up in the hospital.

Just want to know if anyone else experienced something like this is all, really.

Hi Lisa, I know exactly how you feel! My son Aidan(CF) cultured MRSA for the first time about a month ago. I freaked and wanted aggressive treatment even though I was told it may/may not affect him. The CF doctor also did a bronch and MRSA showed us there as well so I was bummed.

Aidan did one week of Rifampin, three weeks of Bactrim, Bactroban up the nose, Phisohex baths and we actually are doing IV Vancomycin for two weeks in a PICC line. He was due for IVs before the MRSA culture because he was going to have sinus surgery. So now we are hopeful? that the MRSA is gone.....

Yay for that!

Hi Lisa,

Staph bacteria is everywhere, whether it's in the environment or even on your own body, as is all sorts of bacteria. It can be spread from person to person. But it doesn't just jump into people. You'd have to have direct contact with the bacteria (at least that's what a top infectious disease doctor said when he told me 50% of his practie is no MRSA.)

Most of the time staph doesn't bother anybody. When staph is resistant to penicillin type drugs, it's MRSA -- the media hype has made it sound worse than it is. There are other drugs currently that work on it. (Again that's what this DR. told me.)

Most boils, those big horrible painful type pimples usually are filled with Staph. Most of the time go away by themselves. But if staff gets into the bloodstream, that's when it's very dangerous. Yet staff in the lungs often doesn't do much of anything, so that's why they don't treat it. Plus it frequently returns at some point. Some research has shown that staff is good to have in CF lungs because it kind of squeezes out Pseudomonas, making the Pseudomonas not able to establish entirely.

Personally, over the years, I've had staph come and go without treatment. I think it once caused an infection. I cultured MRSA several years ago. A year later without treatment it became staph, then disappeared entirely. I couldn't point to any one thing. But I do find staying off of antibiotics brings back sensitivity to all the drugs that have become resistant.
