MRSA

I am 37 years old and was just diagnosed with MRSA for the first time. I was curious to know about the effects of how you feel if you have had MRSA. All I want to do is sleep and have no energy to do anything. Besides the MRSA, my pseudomonas has "flared up" again. I know I am not alone in this, but I was curious to hear from others.

Thanks.

I had MRSA when I was 16. It dropped my PFTs from 90s to 44%. But immediately thereafter, I went on IVs, and have since been pretty well. I haven't cultured MRSA again since 2001. I don't remember much of my symptoms for it except that I felt like poop. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"> Lots of coughing.

Thanks for the info. I have not done PFT's in over 4 years. I have to ask my doctor to order it, but I have slacked off doing that. I think I am doing pretty good considering my age, and the fact that I did not have to do IV treatments until I was 25 years old, and my first hospitaliziation I was 30 years old. But, I have noticed that as I am getting closer to 40, my body has slowed down, and it takes longer for me to bounce back after having a "tune up" or just being sick with sinuses.

I had MRSA when I was 18. It was probably the sickest I have ever felt. I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without coughing ALOT! Like Emily, my pft's went from like the 70's to 28. But, after 3 wks of IV meds, they came back up.

I cultured MRSA in my last culture before being admitted this year. I cant say I feel any worse then I did last year at this time. As a matter fact I feel better than last year, but I was really bad last year. I am currently on home iv's so maybe I will have more to tell you after they are stopped!

CF Foundation recommends PFT's at least once a year.

If you are going to a CFF accredited center, I would quesiton them...

I ALWAYS culture MRSA. It's in me and it's not leaving! When I first got it I was getting very low grade fevers. I went on doxycycline which pretty much kept it under control. Now I'm on bactrim and cipro for other bugs...and about once a year the MRSA kinda joins forces with another bug and I end up on IV's (vancomycin for the MRSA). It's a pain in the butt, but with airway clearance and antibiotics, it shouldn't drag you down too too much.

Both of my children have mrsa. They are 5 and 9. The only thing different is that total isolation when in the hospital. MY daughter is never in the hospital but my son over 20 times in 4 years. He was diagnosed with cf at 1 my daughter was alomost 5 they were diagnosed a few days apart of each other. Last year they both started to culture mrsa every time it has not gone away.

My turn to act ignorant...if they say "she is culturing staph" is that the same thing? or will/should they specify MRSA if that is what it is?
Thank in advance and sorry for the ignorance.

Deb, usually they tell you if it is just staph or MRSA. I culture both along with pseudo. If you are not sure, ask them "just staph?" or for them to read out the full name scientific name.

For the original poster, I ususally know my MRSA is acting up when I start to sleep a lot more than usual. It becames harder to breathe when walking short distances. I dont want to eat like normal. No energy what so ever. When I start sleeping more and eating less, I ususally call the doctor up and start the ball rolling. And like you when MRSA starts a "party" pseudo usually likes to join in....and vise versa. Sometimes my staph is even "invited".

Danyell is right... If someone is culturing staph, they'll say staph. If it's MRSA, they'll say MRSA specifically. There's a difference there. If it MRSA and they only say staph, I'd severely question their... credentials.
