Sometimes coughing up nothing isn't good.....they sound like mucous plugs. I get them, especially in my left lung, I can feel exactly where they are as they create a dull, achy type of pain... You need to hydrate yourself very well, also, make sure you are doing your CPT, HTS, pulmozyme....anything to liquify that stuff so that you can cough it up. It's better out than in, trust me!

yea my drs have me on 3 very powerful antibiotics, hypertonic saline, pulmazyme, albuterol my vest, they even brought in my hospital room a exercise bike and told me to walk, i am still coughing up the bare minimum. the amount is less then half the size of a dime, and it hasn't increased.

Have you layed upside down? I know it sounds crazy but I have to do that on my couch and the mucus just drains out. Very gross but sometimes it helps..but if you aren't bringing up anything at more..it sounds like it's really stuck in there..esp. with the Vest (I use it too) and all the other treatments you mentioned..have the drs. suggested a bronchoscopy to clean out your lungs?

Vampy:

What you describe is a very serious problem. Mucus, remaining in the lungs, will cause PERMANATE LUNG DAMAGE. If I were you, I would be doing sailine, with vest, 3 times a day and getting as much physical activity as possible. Also as Ken suggested, increase your hydration as much as possible.

They haven't offered a surgical clean out of my lungs, in fact i didn't even know they could do that.
When i take my meds its albuterol, hypersail, pulmazyme and then tobi, i start my vest at albuterol and it last thirty minutes. i do them back to back.
Printer, i didn't know all that, i knew that it being in there was a problem, n the dr said with as much meds and antibiotics that i am on i should be coughing up a lot of junk. Im not a big water drinker but i love gatoraid which i am drinking
They are talking about doing a full panel to see what genes i have of the cf, i know i have G511D and they are going to find out if i qualify for kalydeco i sure hope so. They brought me in a exercise bike and told me to push myself really hard that it would help clear my chest, the MOST i can do right now is 5 minutes due to ALL of my vitamin levels are extremely low, my vitamin d is a level 9 and normal is 20-30. so by that little bit i felt like my knees were jiggling like jello. I am hoping all this can be fixed >.<

I ignore all the great advice. I have to admit this is more phobia than anything else. I blow 105% fairly consistently and only from my chst CT's my CF specialist knows when to tie me down for some production. One of my first posts I described a trial encounter with a vest. Having prep'd for three days, I remember a little thump adjustments, the vest did its job all too well. I choked once and woke up on a respirator. I aspirate food frequently and nebulizing albuterol is my toe in the water for a frightning round of hacking and gaging food and phlem is my limit. I don't handle gagging well since at any given time I teeter on yakking most of the time anyway. Here's a cooking tip that has reduced what follows my gag response. Any paletable thoat numbing spray (sore throat medicine otc.) Really improves my odds.

Surely I am not the only CF patient with choking fear that can fake healthy lungs long enough where mucous desicates without turning blue and dying. So many CFers would be so lucky. But I know I am just negotiating a balloon payment. Any suggestiions?

Vampy, in a post you mention vitamin numbers being down, possibly contributing to your low endurance. I didn't bite when the topic of 'What you wish you'd known. My CF diagnosis was made at the age of 51. You know the typical vitamin shortage and conditions their low levels can develop. Vitamin D shortage for 51 years left me with bone density figures in probalility opposed to percentage. By 30 my 80 year old grandmother felt sorry for my arthritis. Printer has spoken on your lungs. You know the drill, with the low D levels you may have been put on 50,000IU D's to bring the numbers up quickly. Do your osteoporsis reversal supliments concomit with your prescription D. If I could put a curse on the doctor of my first 18 years misdiagnosing my CF I would love to lend him my bones. I know you have gotten it from all sides but there is no excuse for not maintaining your vitamin and mineral levels.

I found the vest doesn't do good but the Acapella helps me to get up the thick stuff, also doing steam treatments over a tea kettle or with a hot shower.
My order of treatment, Albuterol, Pulmozyme, hot steamy shower, hi huffs and low huffs while in the shower, then acapella, then Advair. That's what my resp therapist told me to do when I wasn't getting anything up and it worked really well. Maybe it would work for you too.
Hope you feel better soon!

LittleLab4CF I thought I was the only one who gags when eating or swallowing pills! I'll have to try the sore throat spray, never thought of that. I have more trouble coughing when eating then gagging. I'm always afraid I'm going to end up withfood in my lungs!!
Vampy, I hope your mucus problem is getting better! I don't know what advice to give you, except to keep trying!

Vampy, I'm not a water drinker either (or at least I didn't used to be). If you issue really is just taste try mixing water with gatoraide, better yet drink soup broth, tea, eat juicy fruit, flavored water, water with electrolytes, etc. Gatoraide contains high fructose corn syrup and shouldn't be your primary source of hydration. Your body needs vitamins and electrolytes to fight for you.

I've never had a good cough but can snort up mucus with my nose and then finally cough it out...it is a very unpleasant gagging/choking sensation though. I've steamed for many years (but am now worried about pseudomonious although the odds of not having it after litterally
