mycin problems

Has anyone ever had any lasting effects from the mycin group of medicines... Like tobi, gentimycin (sp?), etc...Just wondering because I have had some hearing loss due to this group and was wondering if anyone else had other problems

I haven't necessarily had hearing loss associated w/ these drugs, but I do think especially w/ gentamycin that that can be a side effect. W/ the TOBI is hearing loss or just ringing in the ears, or both listed as side effects??I no longer take TOBI because after a few years of use, I started to get so short of breath (SOB) during my TOBI cycle & haven't had any SOB since I discontinued the use of TOBI. Of course, this was just me, probably not many other people have this reaction to TOBI.

I had a 2 week course of Gent in Jan/Feb (first time I'd had it - I usually have Tobramycin IV and thats never been a problem for me) and then a couple of weeks later I started to feel dizzy (no other side effects, eg: sore ears etc etc). It got so bad that I could hardly walk without feeling really out of sorts and couldn't drive at all. Even any slight movement of my head made me feel really bad, and this in turn made me queazy. I kept going to my GP, but he said there was nothing he could do as all my other reactions were fine. Saw my cf specialist and they said that it was probably the Gent. It eventually went away but took about 2 months. Never actually found out if this was the cause, but considering a side effect of Gent is ear problems, and your hearing also affects balance I'm guessing that it was. Won't be having that again...

Gentamycin is commonly associated with hearing loss and vestibular complaints (dizzyness). If you are treated with IV Gent you should have audio screening done periodically. Aminoglycosides (the family that gent belongs to are know to be "ototoxic".

i too have some hearing loss but im not 100% sure if its the tobramycin that has done it to me. im pretty sure it is though. sometimes i have a hard time understanding what people say especially if they are the mumbling type. unfortunately the cf doc here doesnt make anyone see an audio specialist. also, if someone injects tobramycin too fast you will get temporary hearing loss. one nurse did that to me once and i was as dizzy as anything and couldnt hear a word anyone was saying. i was ok after a few minures though.Kylie

THe only yacin I've been on is IV Tobra. My hearing now is definately not good. I'm getting hearing aids mid May..We're not sure if it's directly from the tobra though. I've had tube and a tympanoplasty in the past few months but it has not helped my hearing a great deal. Tobra works well with me though so I have to get it during my tune ups. THis is just something else to deal with but not hinder me in any way.Good luck,Emily 22 w/cf

I actually would like to thank whoever brought all of this stuff up. I had never been told hearing loss was a problem with the mycins, and it's something I need to watch out for. My major in college is American Sign Language - English interpretation. And granted Deaf people interpret for Deafblind people or other Deaf people, and Deaf people can teach Deaf children, but it's something I should beware of. So thanks for bringing it to my attention.

When my twin boys were 2 one of them ended up on kidney dialysis, caused by what they think was an interaction between gentimycin and ibprofen, they dont take either anymore. After the first tot was put on the dialysis they checked the second tots creatin levels and they were off the chart . Thankfully his kidneys didnt shut down completely like his brothers. As a result the little one that was on dialysis still has trouble with his balance to this day (they are now 11.) He had his hearing checked and every thing was fine. A couple of years ago we got him in to see a nuerologist (spelling?) and we were informed that the part of his brain that deals with balance was damaged and that there was nothing they could do, he would always have trouble with his balance.
