On a plane with another CF'er....what do you do?

I often wear a mask on an airplane, believing that I have become sick in the past from others on an airplane ... I find I am explaining myself to adults, "no, I am not infectious"...and kids look at me funny. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
Does anyone else wear a mask on an airplane?

Write on the mask "This is to protect ME from YOU!", or - "It's not what I have, It's what YOU'VE got!" or "Don't be an A$$hole, Just ASK!!" or something like that. Maybe, since the niece is 7, you could just put funny faces on the masks.

Personally, I've never worn one except when I babysat my Grandson when he was in the hospital with RSV.

That a great idea dbtoo, maybe we'll do that 'project' tonight. Decorate our masks. It's fun to hang out with a 7 year old, anything can be 'cool' if you put a little bit of thought into it.

If you take hand sanitizer, take it in a size of 3 ounces or less in the original container and inside a 1quart zip-locked back that you can hand over for inspection at security. If you do that, they should permit it as carryon according to the latest FAA regulations so long as the person doing the checking is not in an overly combative mood. Purell is 62% ethyl alcohol. FAA regulations let you take "alcohol" if in a container smaller than 3 oz. and inside a ziplock. The same regulations prohibit anything over 70% alcohol (unless they're serving it, I supposed).

i would throw "i dont' want to cross-contaminate" out the window.

the air in airplanes is re-circulated. PA survives on surfaces with sputum for over 40 hours.

you're going to cross-contaminate.

I would be more concerned about catching the flu than worrying about Touching a surface or getting close to another person with CF. Keep hands clean and wear a mask. Change your mask every two hours. Of course take a shower when you get to your destination. There is more Ecoli and who knows what on those chairs.

As a tx patient, I wear a mask when I fly. I have flown on a plane with another person with Cf. I had no idea until I heard, "Risa". We were about five rows away. I was on oxygen at the time flying to an evaluation.

You never know who has what. I personally would not worry about catching anything if you have CF as long as you wear your mask and keep your body as strong as possible. Do your therapies, eat well and HAVE Fun.

believe it or not....the mask is pretty pointless. I mean I would use it to cough into but after 15 minutes they stop flittering properly.

the more i think about this the more i feel badly for your niece. how old is she? she's probably too young to realize the ramifications of being around another CFer in terms of cross-contamination. she may have bacteria for the rest of her life that she has to battle from being next to you on a plane. sound extreme? examine the CFF's standard of care for patients who spend a few minutes with each other in a waiting room.

don't you feel badly about exposing your niece to your bacteria? especially knowing that she might not fully understand the long term consequences? if i were you that would weight heavily on my heart...
