On a plane with another CF'er....what do you do?

I guess I'm still not seeing, the only reference to my birth year (1957) in the CFF Annual Report that I could find was " 1957 Median age of survival reached 5 years" on page 38. Of course, the quote on page 10 is interesting: " Looking back over 50 years of changes in care, Doenshuk marvels at the increase in the median age of survival for people with CF. "Seeing children that we treated now in their 30's, 40's and 50's is exactly what we had hoped for. It is extroadinarily gratifying to see adults with CF getting gray hair and beards, going bald and wearing bifocals.""

Cheeses man,.... let me go get my walker.... , I'm feeling old...! Now where did I put my readers...?

(Amy, I do applaud your physician if they do in fact, sterilize after each patient. That's great. I wish I had docs that did that. Maybe I would live longer.)

Hi Kelli,

Have you ever taken Airborne? I've flown twice in the past year, have taken that each time, and it seemed to ward off any big "bugs" from the airplane (I also wore a mask). Everybody's immune system is different, but why not give it a shot?

Good luck,
Barbara

I think you are missing my original point. You said, in my own words, that "hey, I was around CFers and look at me, I'm ok. So don't criticize Kelli for being around her niece."

My only point about bringing up your age was by using yourself as an example, you refute your own point of it being ok to be around other CFers. Having beat the odds yourself, you aren't a good example of a typical CFer. SO using your experience to support the argument that it's ok for CFers to be around each other is a flawed statement.

That's all I was trying to say.

See now I don't see anyone who wrote anything other than their opinion. We have been over and over this, if someone asks for help as to what to do in a situation then people are going to write their opinions, not just what the SHOULD say.

In my opinion, the arguement about how a lot of people have been around germs and have spread to other CFers when they were younger doesn't hold against what Amy is saying. You guys did not KNOWINGLY spread germs. Amy is saying that this person would KNOWINGLY put herself in the situation. There is a big difference.

I don't know what I would do in the situation, I just hate it when people argue about two seperate things entirely

and to the original poster, it sounds like you are going and that you are going to make every precaution you can so then I hope you have fun. For your sake I hope its a short flight, I know I wouldn't want to be on a flight with a 7 year old for many hours

I see that the jack of all traits and master of none is here again posting statements to make you Kelly feel bad. As the only trait this "master" seems to have available (harrasment all the way).

I agree with the rest of the people who've related to you and told you take your precautions but dont feel bad about travelling with yr niece. There are more germs in an airplane iwht other people's illnesses whom we are not even aware of.
If you are going to worry every time you fly you'd never fly again.
I fly very often, to Sweden, South America, Mexico and yes they flights take their toll on me but I also recover with some good therapies at hand which we all have to do anyway.

You can also buy a Sharper Image portable airpurifier with humidifier that hangs around your neck while you are in the plane, it looks just like a small pair of binoculars and it helps.

Yes its difficult but there are ways already suggested here to best deal with the inevitable. After all you cant live in a bubble.
You ca n also get a surgical mask from a doctors office, those are highly filtered and won't let the bugs out of the mask. Hopefully the flight is short coz i find wearing masks is so uncomfortable but it saves a lot.

You need to tell the airline staff and ask to find a seat where there are not many people around sitting by you, that way you can feel more comfortable too. (about not catching others stuff either).

Since sakasuka knows so much about Europe's Cf people, let me state that he/she is wrong about Denmark and The Netherlands having people living into their late 40's only because of the cross contamination rules.

I come from Europe. I lived in Denmark. my sister was Ambassador at The Netherlands too, and people do vary in ages as far as death. Yes they have had rules for along time about cross contamination, but they also implement a different thinking and approach to cf, some also have thick and have to have thick skin and blood and probably have milder cases (on a few I know of) who have survived very long lifespans (not only to their late 40's).
much older people living with cf well into their 70's there too. Even one in Yugoslavia who was in her 80's. But not all of them in Denmark survive because of the rules of cross contamination ,there is a lot more than that which extends their livespan.

Europe's healthcare system always comes up first with the newest treatments years (at least 3-5yrs) before they land in the FDA to be approved for use in the USA. These gives European people also and advantage: TIME since they are put on the cf medications a lot earlier than you all here in the usa.
