Ovulation

Hi Girls,

I think many of you know that my husband and I have been trying for quite awhile. First, we tried for about 1 year without anything. No kits, basal temps, or anything. Nothing happened! Well, two months ago I decided I had enough of just trying naturally so I bought ovulation kits and Robitussin. Well, both months I had a day or two of faint positives and that was it. It never turned into a strong positive. I have a pretty normal cycle every month and never really suspected that I don't or may not be ovulating. I know the amount of sex isn't the issue. My mind is just blown that that could be it. I have mild CF and good PFT's. I just can't believe it. I must admit, though, that I have been under a little stress, and I managed this month to catch a slight chest cold thanks to the messed up weather here in Pennsylvania. Last week, we has an inch of snow; this week it is 60F. Go figure. I'm sure that's how I caught it. Anyway, does anybody have suggestions or advice? I don't want to get discouraged yet, and I don't believe in IVF or IUI's. And please don't mistake me as putting anyone down, I respect those who choose those fertilty routes. I just feel like I'm the one with CF not my partner. So if it doesn't happen naturally then maybe it's not meant to be. If I can't naturally, I would like to adopt.

Hi Jennifer

You are very pretty! Ok here is my input. I love Energy Medicine and what it has done for my current state of health.

Here is a link on what she talks about becoming pregnant. http://innersource.net/energy_...ng_pregnant.htm

There are countless energy exercises or like Donna calls them Enercises. If you do them every day, you will see results. Some leg exercises and mostly tapping and tracing or sedating meridians that you can do to yourself.

I have been doing these enercises daily for two months. Before hand, I would only use some of them for problems I had while waiting for my transplant. Sedating my lung meridan as well as triple warmer was better than any anxiety pill. I tried anxiety meds and felt sick from them.

She has a chapter on Triple Warmer and the Strange Flows and I would read that one first if you decide to try this new kind of healing. If you are allergic to anything you eat or an allergen, you can go through some of the steps she described and bring your body to accept the allergen.
I have a lot more to share but not at this time. When you try something that helps you in any way, you want to share it with others.

Jennifer,
Have you tried charting your basal body temps? That is one way to know for sure if you are ovulating. While TTC I charted every month and every month I ovulated but only a few times did I get a strong + on ovulation tests.
Here is my little story. I got pregnant on our honeymoon Oct of 2003. Sadly I miscarried at 12 weeks. We started TTC again right away and that is when I started charting my temps and using OPK kits. After 12 months of trying and no pregnancies I went to my OB/GYN. She order a HSG test and blood work. I also had a consultation with a reproductive Dr. The reproductive Dr. said we would do IUI the following cycle as long as all the tests looked good. I had the HSG which showed that my tubes were open and my uterus normal. We got pg just a few days after the HSG test. It took us 14 cycles to get pregnant. No need for IUI. Our daughter was born Sept. 2005. We have not been avoiding pregnancy since she was born and here we are almost 12 cycles since my period returned after delivery, no pregnancy yet. I did breastfeed for 12 months so I am sure that plays into us not being pregnant even though my cycles have been normal 12 months.
Good luck!

Hey jennifer,
Don't get discouraged yet. With my first pregnancy, my husband and I tried for a year and a half. Like you, I did not chart, take temps or anything. We had pretty much given up, but I had started taking the Robitussin. After two months of taking it, we got pregnant.

The second time around, I did some reading! I read Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health by Toni Weschler. This is a great book for every woman! Anyway, I charted and took ovulation kit tests for a few months. Like Anne, I knew I was ovulating from charting, but the test only once showed a slight surge, so I quit using them. I had a few months where I was sick and stopped trying while I took meds. When we resumed, I didn't use the Robitussin at first. In total we had been trying for about a year on and off (due to some other things). About the third month that I used the Robitussin, I got pregnant! I really think charting and learning more about my body from the book helped the process. I think the temp charting and other things in the book (the method called Family Planning) will help you understand more clearly what is going on and also reduces the stress involved with the month to month wondering of "Am I pregnant?"

I hope this info helps you. Good Luck.

I read that book months before we started trying too-it is a wonderful book. It helped me alot. The charting is amazing-it really shows you how incredible our bodies are. Also, I was thinking-how is your diet? Before we tried, I went to a naturopath doctor and he suggested all types of things to try/to avoid. And gave me supplements. He thinks that yeast in the uterus can be one reason why women have trouble conceiving. Since we cfers have tons of mucus in our bodies, and mucus is made up of yeast, it made sense for me. I made some small changes, and here I am. 2 months of trying. I also used Robitussin. And give it time and be patient-a stressed out body will not conceive.

Hi Girls,

Thank you very much for your words of encouragement!

Risa - Thank you very much for suggesting energy medicine; however, I decline for now. The reason why is because I actually attended a woman in Lancaster, PA from July-November 2006 who perfomed energy healing. Her name was Gail Materna. I think I spelled her name right. Maybe you have heard of her. Well, about 9 months ago, my aunt (who has a disease that is a cousin to CF) recommended that I try going to her. At the time, my health was fine so I declined. Plus, it's like a 2 hour drive each way!!! However when I ended up on IV's in July, I started to go once a week. Of course I was feeling better after I stopped the IV's, but I still continued to go to her until the end of November. Did she really help - I don't know? I found that if you told her something was bothering you that she was quick to say at the end of your hour treatment that she felt that that energy level was down. Then towards the end of October, I had a cold in my chest and was on Cipro for 2 weeks. I never let on to her that I was having problems. I thought she should be able to read that right???? Guess again. She asked how I was at the beginning. I said fine waiting to she if she could pick up on it. She never did. Needless to say, I continued going for another month and quit. I don't think she helped much plus with winter coming I wasn't about to drive 2 hours each way in bad weather for something that I doubted really helped me. So yes you could say I kind of have a bitter taste in my mouth right now about the whole thing. I lost $55.00/hour once-a-week plus gas. Like I really have money to give away. Honestly, Risa, thank you for your response to my situation. I really appreciate it. We have talked before regarding other issues and often agree. And as far as this issue, I'm saying no for now but may contact you in the future. Thank you!!!

Anne - No, I never tried charting my basal body temps. I thought that I would just get the ovulation kits and Robitussin. I figured that the kits would be well enough - I was wrong again. These past two months it has been a faint positive for two days in a row then negative again. HOWEVER, I also learned that they are best taken around 2:00 pm. Is that when you took them? I thought the morning like a pregnancy test would have been best. Now I learned that it actually is best in the early afternoon because the LH level usually surges after the first 4 hours that a woman is awake. I didn't know that. For the past two months, I had been taking them first thing in the morning. Another note is that I have been using the website mymonthlycycles.com to better determine my ovulation date. It has been very close with its analysis. It's so accurate that I really do find it hard to believe that I am not ovulating. It might be one day off and that is when I get the faint positive. If I didn't conceive this cycle, I think I will be starting the basal temps next cycle. I'll finish the kits that I have and not bother buying them again. They are useless. Thank you for sharing your story with me and good luck with trying to conceive your second child. You are an inspiration to me. Also, I am sorry to hear about your miscarrage. That must have been so hard for you and your husband.

Wendy - Thank you for your words of encouragement. Your experience with TTC sounds much like mine. We tried for 1 year with nothing. Although, we didn't try from May-August 2006 since I was sick and on IV's in July. I had been on IV's for 3 years though prior. I wasn't on any oral antibiotics for about 1.5 years. The last time I was on oral antibiotics 1.5 years ago was for strep throat. It had nothing to do with the CF. Anyway, it has now been 1 year trying so in November I made the decision to start the Robitussin and ovulation kits. Like I said to Anne, I never did the basal temps. I thought the kits would be enough - wrong. I also use the website mymonthlycycles.com to better predict my ovulation date and it's only off a day or two. Also, I will use up the kits and then that's it. I will not buy more. The Robitussin I will continue to use. I also learned that the ovulation kits are best done around 2:00 pm. Did you know that? I didn't. That may have had something to do with it. I was performing them like you would a pregnancy test - first thing in the morning. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your story. Congrats with your first son, Ian, and to your new little arrival in June. I am so happy for you!!!

I find it hard to believe that the faint positive is so close that I don't ovulate. I know this month we timed everything perfect. However, if we didn't conceive, I will start doing the basal temps. If you have any other advice, I would love to hear it!

Christian - I'll be PM'ing you. I haven't heard from you for awhile. I hope everything is ok!!!

Jennifer - I used the ovulation tests in the afternoon. My test lines would get pretty close to positive but never a really dark line like one may expect. My trouble was holding my pee for 4 hours before taking the test. While TTC I make sure to drink a lot of water to help thin mucus. It is impossible to drink 8+ glasses of water and hold it for 4 hours!
I know how hard TTC can be. It can be mentally and emotionally draining. Please try to remember that even in women without CF the chances of a pregnancy with well timed intercourse is very small, like less then 20%! I know that stat kind of stinks but I put it out there to remind you not to lose all hope. Just stick with it. Each month that you do not get pg brings you one cycle closer to the cycle that you will get pg! The wait may be long but oh so worth it when it happens.
Take care and STAY STRONG!
