PFT numbers...

I'm aware this topic has probably done the rounds many times but I'm really curious to hear new opinions!<div><br></div><div>So my pfts are around 50-52% and have been for around 5 years. I am really fit, ran a half marathon last year, plan on doing another this year, I could list all my activities here but I won't- my point is I have really good functioning but a pft which is labelled as only moderate.</div><div><br></div><div>I want to know is this really subjective? Is it all relative to the person? I know someone else dropping from 120 to 80% would feel significantly worse than me. Sometimes I panic and think I should be worried about my number...even though I'm doing great! </div>

In my experience it really all has to do with how well your body handles it. For instance, my baseline is in the 80s but I really struggle a lot of the time - I wake up a lot coughing at night, get SOB a lot, etc. Definitely not anywhere near a half marathon!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> But my lungs are also unstable, i.e. I get sick a lot.

I have one friend who is in the teens and only just barely started full time o2 in the last few years. So everyone's body handles the disease differently! A lot of it also has to do with how much you're actually getting sick etc.

I think there are 2 factors at play that contribute to endurance. The overall capacity of the person to take in oxygen for gas exchange in the lungs and the efficacy with which the body uses that oxygen. I know many healthy-looking people who could not run an half marathon or full marathon, yet probably have perfectly normal PFT scores. They have the capacity, but not the efficiency. With training, your body uses oxygen more efficiently, so while you may be at 50% capacity, you may be doubly efficient and it balances out.

This is why docs stress exercise so much, not only does it keep your lungs healthy and a lot of mucus cleared out, it also improves your overall CV health and you can see a marked improvement in how you feel.

My number runs abt the same 50% for many years now and I have only one functioning lung for quite a few years the right is completely dieseased and does not show up on the xray anymore. I am on 02 at night, the only excercise I can handle is walking and not at a fast pace either and if it's raining I go up and down my basment 12 steps 10-12x a day I am short of breath doing that but I think I just can't sit and do nothing. But running I know I cannot do at all, and I miss salsa dancing soooooo much, it just takes my breath away. CF and age, what can you do? Trust yr. body on how you feel most of all. I stopped worrying abt numbers a long time ago. Pat-CF-56
